The optional units below are an attempt to detail the major vessels of significant naval traditions.

  • Note that the Tech Level requirements differ a little from the canon Unit Build Charts to reflect the use of gunpowder aboard vessels. No pun intended...

  • The Armor represents the combination of armor, structural strength, compartmentalization, damage control, etc., as it applies to gunnery, torpedoes and bombing.

Notes:

  • Riverine Traffic: Only “XX” and “X” class ships can move up Rivers. This includes Transports assigned to inter-nation or inter-city trade.
    • “H*” class vessels can move along the Yellow River and any associated canals.
  • Canals: Only “XX”, “X” and “M” class ships may pass through the Lower Nile/Nile Canal sea zone between Gulf of Cyprus and Red Sea and the Panama Canal in Guayami between Gulf of Venezuela and Sea of Panama. Only “XX” and “X” class ships may pass through the Kiel, Lagoda and Niagara Canals.
  • The Panama Canal Upgrade: To allow the passage of “H” and “HH” class ships through the Panama Canal, it must be substantially upgraded to larger locks, deeper drafts in the channel bottoms and so on. This is a level three (3) Megalithic Project, during which time the Canal is closed to all traffic.
  • The Queta Canal Upgrade: To allow the passage of “H” and “HH” class ships through the Queta Canal, it must be substantially upgraded to larger locks, deeper drafts in the channel bottoms and so on. This is a level two (2) Megalithic Project, during which time the Canal is closed to all traffic.
  • The Suez Canal: The Suez Canal can carry all kinds of ship traffic.

TL8 Ships
Carrack Ocean Shorn tail Three or four-masted sailing ship with a high rounded stern with an aftcastle and a forecastle and bowsprit at the stem. Square-rigged on the foremast and mainmast and lateen-rigged on the mizzenmast.

Roman Roundship Sea Large ship with rounded bow and stern with an overhanging stern, great steering oar, heavy whales, substantial and complex rigging, triangular topsail and large square sail.
Trireme Med Classical warship with a ram, three rows of oars on each side, manned with one man per oar.
Bireme Med Classical warship with a ram, two rows of oars on each side, manned with one man per oar.
TL6 Ships
Dromon Med Runner Developed from the trireme, propelled by both oar and sail with a central tower near the main mast; frequently equipped with flamethrowers and catapults.
TL 7 Ships
Caravel Ocean Small, highly maneuverable, two- or three-masted ship
Galley Sea Developed from the dromon, low flat-built sea-going vessel with one deck, propelled by lateen sails and oars.
TL8 Ships
Galleass Sea Developed from and larger than the galley, heavy low-built vessel, with up to 32 oars, each worked by up to 5 men, three masts and a forecastle and aftcastle. The sails were often a mixture of lanteen and square.
Carrack Ocean Shorn tail Three or four-masted sailing ship with a high rounded stern with an aftcastle and a forecastle and bowsprit at the stem. Square-rigged on the foremast and mainmast and lateen-rigged on the mizzenmast.

Badan Sea Small dhow with a shallow draught.
Dhow Sea Planked vessel with a double-ended hull that comes to a point at both the bow and the stern, with a triangular or lateen sail.
Ghanjah Sea Large dhow with a curved stem and a sloping, ornately carved transom.
Chinese
TL6 Ships
Lou Chu'an River Tower ship Square-shaped multi-storey (usually three storey) 'floating fortress' vessel, mainly used on the Yellow River, and of restricted usefulness on the open sea.
Zhan Chu'an Sea War junk Smaller sized single storey vessel, with a flat keel, with the oarsmen outside central deckhouse, with a raised stern. The sails of a junk can be moved inward, toward the long axis of the ship, allowing the junk to sail into the wind.
Meng Chong Sea Covered swooper Two-storey assault warship, oarsmen on the lower protected deck.
Zou Ge Sea Flying barque Small, fast oared vessel.
You Ting Sea Patrol boat Small boat carrying marines.
Hai Hu Ocean Sea hawk Converted merchant junk with a low bow and high stern.

Paddle-wheel Fighting Ship River Two-storey warship with one or more pairs of wheels powered by treadmills, mostly used on the Yellow River, and of restricted usefulness on the open sea.
Hai-po Chu'an Ocean Sea-going junk Large sea-going ship with watertight bulkheads, a flat keel, balanced rudders and sails extended with battens, with three or four masts.

O Ataka Bune JSea Great battleship Huge, unwieldy floating fortress, possibly with iron plates for armor.
Mekura Bune Sea Blind ship Small fast oared vessel, sometimes with bamboo bundles and pitched bamboo roof for protection.
TL8 Ships
Seiro Bune JSea Siege tower ship Adapted from a medium or large vessel with a large wooden seige tower replacing the deckhouse, anchored for stability.

War Barge Sea Very large dugout canoe.

Environment:

  • Ocean - can safely cross open ocean arrows, and operate in hostile sea zones and sea zones.
  • HSea - can safely operate in hostile sea zones and sea zones.
  • JSea - can safely operate in the sea zones surrounding the main Japanese home islands.
  • Sea - can safely operate in sea zones.
  • Med - can safely operate only in enclosed seas such as the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
  • River - can safely operate on rivers, canals and lakes.

If a vessel is used outside its safe operating environment, there is a high risk that it will be lost with all hands.
