Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn
Also known as: Illuminated Order of the Dawn and possibly the Societe Arcane. Wolfden & Cane Holdings proved to be a front for the Golden Dawn.

Turn 169, The Swedish Empire of Russia
"Edmund Crane, F.R.S., passed away in Lubeck while en route to visit a colleague at Stockholm University. The noted philosopher's body was discovered in an inn near the harbour, where apparently was poisoned, strangled, bludgeoned, stabbed, shot several times, and then decapitated. The wall's of Crane's room were covered with odd symbols, including a purple figure, a fishhook cross, a black dagger, a insect head, a death's head, an eye in a pyramid, several pentacles, a tree, a black ideogram, and a peculiar yellow mark. According to the innkeeper, several strange men visited Crane on the night of his death. Some of these men wore dark purple, red, white, grey, black, green, or yellow robes, one wore a turban, and one reportedly hummed or 'buzzed' to himself. It appears the men were acquainted, for they seemed surprised to see each other, and they shared a round of drinks, engaged in an animated discussion, then all shook hands before they went upstairs."

Editor's Note: The Eye in the Pyramid appears to be the Illuminati - aka the Golden Dawn.

T176, Great Britain
Some odd disappearances were reported in the Hebrides, including a London brush-salesman, which in turn led to raids by the Protectors on various smugglers dens. The culprits were executed after a fair and speedy trial.

These events as well as a catastrophic warehouse district fire in Kingston (reportedly some secret government activities were taking place there and they went awry) caused Cromwell to come out with a statement: "...these events are the work of diverse agents of Darkness calling themselves, variously, the 'Illuminated Order of the Dawn' and the Knights of Wonder, but they are one and the same - vile, demon-worshipping heretics nesting in the confused and troubled lands of war-torn Europe".

Editor's Note: As the Illuminati may have infiltrated the Knights of Wonder their confusion is not unlikely.

T190 1707 - 1708
Sebastian Cane sat in a room without angles, writing at a desk. From beyond the door, the bright sounds of children laughing and playing reached his ears. He was an old man, with white hair and a small, neatly trimmed, mustache. But his hand was strong as he wrote. The fluid characters marched down the page in perfect order. From time to time, he would stop and carefully mark off a section of the page for an illustration. The spiky letters quivered on the page, tensed to leap into reality.

A tap at the door drew his attention. Ouré was there, leaning wearily against the doorjamb. Cane smiled and strode around the desk, taking his old friend's hand and leading him to the small couch. One of Alexander's toys was in the way, but Cane carefully lifted the soapstone figurine and placed it on the end table. Beady little agate eyes glittered up at him in the candlelight.

"Did it work?" asked Cane, quietly.

Ouré nodded, his face drawn and tired. "Like… a charm. It is close, very close."

T210, Frankish Commonwealth
The W&C were backed by the Illuminati, the Golden Dawn. A shadowy organization claiming to be arch enemies of the Bone Mother Cult.

T212, Spain
Though this was very interesting, the prince soon returned to Lisbon to attend his wedding, to the lady Anna Marie Cortez (from a cadet line of the old family). His father, looking particularly overstuffed in a jacket so braided with gold you could barely make out the fabric...

T215, Frankish Commonwealth
Elegant, flattering letters were crafted to the royal family in Brabant and to the merchant houses in Holland. The letters proposed marriages into the house of du Maine and all the benefits associated with it to the royal household of Brabant and to the merchant houses of Holland. The letters also promised that seaports would be built in each of these lands over the next five years so that they might prosper and grow. The letters further promised the protection of the Commonwealth against the growing troubles in the region and against the intrigues of secret empires such as the Golden Dawn.

T216, Spain
Tipped off by certain interested parties, the Republican government mounted a series of massive raids the length and breadth of the realm to find and destroy the organization known as the ‘Golden Dawn’, which had caused so much strife and discontent in Spain all these years… Il Commandant and a sizable force of elite troops swept down on Barcelona and blocked over several neighborhoods before charging in to go house to house, seeking the notorious Alexander Cane and his supporters.

Fighting broke out immediately, both between the Republican guardsmen and the cultists – and between Largo and his own troops, some of whom were apparently in the pay of the Dawn. Largo, trapped in crossfire in the atrium of the Cane estate, was shot down by his own men. Bishop Mendoza, leading the secondary assault team, was similarly ambushed. Fires were started, burning down the whole neighborhood. The Cane family escaped, though not without loss.

At much the same time, Prince Juan launched his own purge in Lisbon, ordering arrests in the city and among the clergy. He too was the subject of an assassination attempt, but escaped (though wounded). The circumstances of the attack on the prince convinced Juan that not only were most of his officers Dawnists, but so too were many of the government clerks and ministers. Excessive measures, therefore, were demanded – as soon as he survived the gunshot wounds and worse… ...
Back in Lisbon, with the death of nearly half the citizenry (and all of the of-age members of the Cabellero family) things devolved into chaos. The parliament fled the city, the regimental commanders waged open war upon one another (a Dawnist coalition attempted to seize the citadel and the port), and everything seemed quite bleak.Into this moment stepped a minor colonel of the horse-guards who, by chance, was a relative of the dead Cabellero dynasty. His name was Charles Bourbon, a Spaniard hidalgo of half-Italian descent through the Farnese dukes of Parma. By daring and a complete lack of fear, he grasped control of the loyal regiments still in Lisbon, crushed the Dawnist cabal, reclaimed their troops, quarantined infected districts and stopped all ships from fleeing the city by means of a boom of barges across the harbor-mouth manned by his gunners.

His cavalry fanned out into the countryside, dragging the parliamentarians back into the capital and forcing them (at bayonet point, no less) to acclaim him as King of Spain. This turn of events was not met with universal acclaim… Zufar, Aquitaine, Auvergne (and Limoges), Estremadura, Languedoc (and Narbonne), and Salamanca all rose up in revolt or simply refused to acknowledge Charles’ regime in Lisbon.

In the capital, Charles cleaned house viciously, having hundreds of Dawnist supporters and sympathizers executed, their lands and properties seized for the crown, their children driven out as exiles. Civil liberties were suppressed for the duration of the crisis.

T217, Society of Jesus
Seeking to expand their presence in troubled Spain, where vigorous efforts were being made by all parties to expunge the heretical and doubtless infernal influence of the Golden Dawn, the Society established a ‘quarter’ in Corunna, expanding the city a level.

Despite the fact he was still grappling with the remnants of the Golden Dawn conspiracy, and much of his domain resembled like a Swiss cheese, King Charles decided there was no time to be lost in revitalizing the economy of the realm and in catching up with the rest of the world in technological toys… substantial efforts were begun to dredge the river to Seville, making that inland town a port, while Madrid became a center of airship production and the shipyards at Lisbon expanded again. A pair of brand-new NorskTek steam cruisers were delivered to the Spanish Navy and were immediately torn apart bolt by bolt to help jumpstart native shipbuilding capability. The steadily increasing steam-powered naval strength of the Danes and Franks did not make Charles sleep well at night. In exchange, the Kingdom granted the Company a variety of valuable monopolies.

To fuel all of this, however, Charles elected to strip all available manpower from his city garrisons, the fleet and to put off rebuilding the army for another turn… a daring plan which immediately ran afoul of perverse circumstance.

To Mr. Cane and his associates,

As I am sure you now know we have closed down parts of your illegal group, and will continue to do so until you are removed from all Spanish-held lands. You have no one to blame but yourselves for this war. If declared war when you and your cult killed the Crowned Emperor Walter de Cortez a year before he took the throne. Records show that you approached Largo Cabellero, and offered a peace and had promised you would cease and desist in your drive to infiltrate the Spanish government, military, and religion, yet as we have seen you were unable to keep your word. If Largo knew then what we know now I am sure he would have never listened to you. Now that we know you to be a follower of the Yellow masked Demon there will be no peace, no rest for you until you are caught and punished for your acts. Every member of your family will be taken into custody and put to The Question. Holy men from both the Catholic Church, and Hussite Church will be allowed to interview them, and if trace of corruption be found they will burn at the steak as heretics. You will be hunted down like a rabid animal that you are and shall never know peace while you breath, no matter where you hide, we will be chasing you, we will expose you to the world and let them help crush you into the dirt. As of this moment all assets of the Cain family are forfeit to the Spanish Senate, all monies in all banks in there name are hereby confiscated, every member of his organization are no longer Spanish citizens and will not be protected by any treaty or alliance. Furthermore a price of 10 gold pieces is placed on the head Mr. Cain, and 5 on each of his henchmen. To collect bring the head to your nearest Spanish Embassy or City Hall. Double the gold if they are still alive to face a jury for there treason and crimes against the people of Spain. Antonio Domingo
Prime Minister of Cultic Research And Prosecution Committee

The King himself set out for Madrid, where his agents reported a festering cyst of Dawnist influence.

Meanwhile, in the south, Bishop Fernandes had taken command of the garrison of Andalusia and led the men there (supplemented by a large force of mercenaries) in a vigorous purge of ‘cultic influences’ in Seville, Andalusia and Tharsis. As the prelate was gifted with substantial intelligence seized from the Dawnist stronghold in Barcelona, and possessed of considerable native wit, the sweep netted hundreds of Dawnist sympathizers, seized dozens of properties and generally ransacked their operations in the south.

Norsktrad: The Norskvarden, in fact, made mass arrests in St. Georges after a three-year investigation into reputed Golden Dawn influence was completed. Hundreds of local citizens were tried and convicted of anti-Imperial activities and membership in a banned organization.

T218, Events in Spain
Bishop-General Nunez of the Holy Church leads an army of 15,000 Templars into Gascony and Cimmura, where they launch a province-wide Inquisition, searching for Golden Dawn adherents. Those found (and there were indeed some lurking about) were hanged and the bodies burned to ash.

Redfang’s Cruzadero’s reach Corunna and are reinforced by new levies (and volunteers from Amerika). Raids are made in the city, yielding up a Golden Dawn cell – the cultists die agonizing deaths by auto-da-fé.

Pamphlets circulate in much of northern Spain, claiming that the Cruzadero leadership was (and is) under the control of a secretive anti-religious organization called the Golden Dawn.

In Valencia, Duke Stormcrow of Elmerland, having made careful investigations, launches a series of raids in the province and city, netting a Golden Dawn cell and lodge, and capturing many prisoners.

Nunez subjects the Aquitainians to the Inquisition, leaving entire villages burning, and thousands of scarecrows lining the roads. By all reports, the entire province secretly hewed to the Golden Dawn.

T219, Republic of Denmark
A quieter, but no less important war continued at home, where federal police raided a number of suspected Dawnist safe-houses in the capital itself, dragging many prisoners away.

Frankish Commonwealth
The Commonwealth had worked for many years to try and complete this project in the Archon’s lands, to some success. If... if, the Archon needed any justification in the actions that the Commonwealth had taken he need only point to Spain as an example.

Be that as it may, the destruction of Bourbon Spain had done nothing to ease the mind of the Archon. In its place had sprouted a veritable paella of unappetizing replacements. The Golden Dawn still held sway in many places, the fanatical and unpredictable Cruzaderos ran rampant and now the Duchy of the Three Isles had interfered in matters on the mainland.

The War of the Spanish Succession
Acting on an anonymous tip, Armand Lorento (a Islander agent working in Languedoc with the local authorities to root out cultic elements abandoned in the wake of the Spanish collapse) raided a Golden Dawn infestation in the countryside, capturing many conspirators and killed a round dozen.

Bernard de Gellone, the Duke of Narbonne, is gunned down by Frankish agents on the streets of his own city. All of southern France is thrown into panic by this cruel act, for every wit and dullard can tell this only presages war… mass arrests searching for more Frankish infiltrators do, however, turn up a clutch of Golden Dawn cultists among a community of retired Spanish officers living in the city.
