The carrack was the first true ocean-going ship developed in the Mediterranean - stable and able to carry provisions for long voyages. It had three or four masts - square-rigged on the foremast and mainmast and lateen-rigged on the mizzenmast - and had a high rounded stern with an aftcastle and a forecastle and bowsprit at the stem. It was eventually replaced by the galleon.
