King Holawuson

Diplomacy and Warfare: Lekskoza [-UN], Livohamm [-UN] in Livo-Joki
The War of Words and Swords
1567: Spring - Swedish agents slip into Livohamm, seeking a meeting with Holawuson's brother, Waldumar, promising him the throne if he will but usurp it. The agents bring much gold to grease fingers with, and truly, the situation looks bleak for the Orthodox Kingdom. Waldumar agrees. He soon sets about converting the army in Livohamm to his cause, but Kullervo, the Heir and his nephew catches wind of the plan. The next few days are tense as both men vie for the hearts of the men. Kullervo is a better man than his uncle, however, and wins the tide. He personally witnesses the royal hanging. Kullervo spends the following months disbanding the navy and pulling back into Karela proper to set up the defenses there.
1567: Fall - King Sten mass conscripts and begins gathering the troops after making the voyage to Viborg. He joins lieutenant Axel in Mikelli and the two prepare to march into Lekskoza. Prince Ange sails with his light elite fleet to Viborg as well, ordered to retrieve some of the newly built troops. King Sten has taken them all to Mikelli, however, so Ange is forced to leave empty-handed. He sails back to the Gulf of Bochnia.
1568: Spring - Prince Ange amphibiously attacks the city of Livohamm, and finds the defenders gone. Liberated, the city returns to friendly control. Without ground troops of any sort, Ange is unable to push on into the region itself.
1568: Fall: King Sten and his forces conquer Lekskoza [Rules Note: You may only Attack to Liberate [AL] Occupied [OC] holdings (holdings held previously at F or A status). Otherwise you must AT or A] without issue, finding no defenders left in the region. They push through into Karela, and quickly bring to battle the Karelan army. Sweden commands 2,400 Cavalry, 10,000 Infantry, 18 Companies of engineers, and 30 artillery batteries to the Karelan forces of 800 Cavalry, 7,200 Infantry, 12 Engineer Companies, 12 Artillery Batteries, and 4 field forts. Sten is successful in pushing the Karelan's out of their dug in positions, destroying the four forts and some 2000 Karelan troops to losing only 1,000 Swedish. Unfortunately, Lieutenant Axel is captured during one of the skirmishes.
1569: Spring - King Sten continues the push alone, but is rebuffed. Losing 2,200 troops to the Karelan's 1,000.
1569: Summer - Again Sten presses the attack, but he is growing hasty without his advisor present to help him. Another 2,400 Swedish dead, the King himself wounded in the thick of the fighting, while the Karelans lose only some 800.
1569: Fall - King Sten falls victim to an ambush during the final months of the fighting season. He is captured as well, leaving the Swedes without a leader. The army retires to Mikelli (down another 1,800 troops). The Karelan's count their dead at 1,000 for the round, but celebrate their victory over the winter.
King Holawuson sends out another missive to the members of the Baltic Treaty:
|
Once again the Lord has shown fit to grant us victory. Once again, Swedish leaders are placed in the Karela dungeon. This time, a King among criminals. Once again we look for a peaceful resolution to this war, this war of Swedish aggression, and we look to our neighbors on the Baltic to facilitate such an agreement. If foreign armies once again enter Karela, I see but little choice than to execute all the Swedish prisoners Karela now possesses. It is clear Karelan blood means little. Perhaps noble Swedish blood will mean more. |

Diplomacy and Warfare: Lebus [-A] then [-UN] in Kauyavia [-A] then [-UN], Dresden [T] in Meissan [EA], Brunswick [F] in Saxony, Erfurt [Revolts] in Thuringia
Westphalia is the target of investigation this time, and the Emperor begins a second dredging project along the Elbe. The big news is the land deal made with Poland:
|
The emissaries of that mighty ally of the Holy Roman Empire, the Emperor of Poland and Lithuania, made an offer that couldn't be refused: wagonloads of gold, in exchange for the rich region of Kauyavia and her capital of Lebus. In return for ceding control of these Slavic lands, the Emperor would renounce all claims to the properly German Duchy of Meissen. Jaroslav, Duke of Kauyavia and voting member of the Fürstenrat, would have objected, but a marriage into the Imperial House and the crown of the Imperial capital of Kolberg seemed to mollify him, as he signed away his hereditary lands back to Polish nobility in favor of a cosmopolitan life in the bustling capital. He was later sent to pay a royal visit to the Duke of Meissen |
Not everyone was pleased with this arrangement. The German people were nothing if not proud of their heritage, and the selling off of their historical lands to the expansionist Polish Crown was whispered by some as a betrayal. A betrayal, no less, than by one not even duly elected as Emperor. The discontent was heard loudest in the city of Erfurt where the local population (mainly whipped into a frenzy by the vocal students of the city) harassed, assaulted, and finally evicted pro-Imperial members of the city council. Casimir's ability to rule over the city was completely lost in the turmoil.

The Ottoman forces do not attempt to block the Papal movement, and the troops make it to Alfold unharmed. As they enter Alfold, the Papal forces encounter the first of the Hungarian army.
The Hungarians attack. "Let 'em feel Baptist steel,' is the calling cry as Hungary leads 14,000 Cavalry, 28,000 Infantry, 90 artillery batteries and a smattering of sixty odd field forts against the Papal army of 15,000 Cavalry, 3,000 Infantry, 10 companies of engineers and 10 batteries of artillery.
Expecting to be hailed as liberators, the Papal forces are massacred, escaping the region with only 2,000 of their cavalry remaining. Two bishops, and Innocent himself, are wounded when all is said and done. Some 10 forts of the Hungarians are lost in the fighting. Innocent licks his wounds for the winter in Slovakia.

equipped, to join the war in Hungary against the Ottoman invaders. However,
before crossing the mountains into Hungary from Bochnia, Zbigniew died and the
troops remained outside of Krakow leaderless.
The Poles had hoped to build a city on Hell's Island, to gain access to the diamond mines there, but Milan had a similar thought. Unfortunately, Milan had thought to bring troops. Bishop Antonius was in charge of the expedition and tried to push his claim for Poland to the island, but in truth both fleets had arrived in the same month. Without clear proof of prior possession, nor the forces to leverage such proof, Antonius was left with little choice but to haul the resources and colonists back with him to Freeport.

War of the Boy Kings
1567: Spring - The Ottoman General, Abaza, is wounded by assassins who manage to cut through his personal bodyguard. He soldiers on, linking up with Kemel Bey in Slovakia, where a third Ottoman general with troops has already come.
1567: Summer - The Ottomans attempt to sneak a fleet into Belgrade, but the Hungarian Admiral responds. Hungary slips down the Danube, confronting the 26 Ottoman warships with his own 50. The Ottomans attempt to evade battle, but are caught, and suffer complete destruction, all ships either sinking or captured by the Hungarians. The Ottomans do manage to sink 24 of the Hungarian ships, including the flagship for Admiral Zachary. He finds his way ashore to Bosnia, but is captured by the Ottoman garrison there. The leaderless fleet (up a few captured Ottoman ships) retires to Buda without a leader.
1569: Spring - Both sides simply waited. The Hungarians in Alfold, the Ottomans in Slovakia. Finally, deciding the Hungarians were not going anywhere, pushes the army into Bakony, then across the river to Banat. Hungary does not move to respond, and Kemel easily crushes the eight leaderless forts guarding the region. One week after the attack is concluded, the army in is awoken in the middle of the night by some sort of light coming from the mountains which gets rapidly brighter and brighter. Soon, the entire force is awake, gazing at the approaching whiteness. It envelopes the army, drowning out everything except the White. Then, instantly, the light vanishes, everything is as it was, except for one: Kemel Bey lays dead on the ground.
1569: Summer - Abaza wastes no time in claiming the white light was a sign from Allah, and that he is now a Prophet in the eyes of god. He murders the remaining general in Banat, seizing control of the entire army. All of the Hungarian garrisons swear fealty to him. Meanwhile, in Bursa, Dominus faces his own challenges. Many revolt at the concept of a half-Greek Sultan, and two leaders quickly gain the needed support to contest the boy's rule. Masud becomes the top man, and orchestrates the downfall of Dominus. The boy is beheaded, and Masud takes command of the capital.
1569: Winter - As word spreads of the turmoil, many regions and cities throw off the reigns of control of the Ottomans.

The Allied Leader of Merv meets his death doing the same in Kophat-Dagh. Finally, a third leader investigates Gurgan. Baber III takes a small force and easily conquers and enslaves Gurgan.
Two leaders invade Turkmen, but the local garrison (despite being outnumbered over 50 to 1) manage to raid and strike the Baber camp. Fires erupt, munitions explode, and chaos generally ensues. The army, unsure of the terrain, routes, though only having lost some 500 men. The following season the army regroups and marched back into the region, discovering no resistance. The defenders had perished in the small skirmish (only 800 men themselves) and could not rally to repulse the Baber a second time.
