King Boris
Diplomacy and Warfare: Agder [-EA], Alesund [-EA] in Fjordane, Halland [-EA], Bergen [-EA] in Hordaland [A] then [-EA], Oslo [-EA] in Norway [-EA], Vastervik [-EA] in Skane,
King Gunter declares the nation officially Protestant, which sees the immediate degradation of control over the people residing in the Catholic lands. "As long as they keep paying taxes," he was heard to say. Gunter's wife would die in childbirth later in the year, and he would follow her to the grave shortly thereafter. Gunter's brother Boris would assume the throne and continue the policies, which included three cities expanding and a new fortress in Copenhagen. Late in the cycle the Agder militia reported some sort of armed conflict erupting in the hills outside of Grimstad, but by the time officials responded to the scene the criminals had vanished.

Emperor Reynaud I
Diplomacy and Warfare: Capeland [N/E], Barmouth [FA] in Gwynned, Liverpool [N/E] in Lancashire, Limousin [-EA], Le Mans [-EA] in Maine, New Oopland [N/E], Normandy [-EA], Nouveau Reims [-EA] in Opwick
Colonists were again shipped to the New World for the purposes of creating a city while exploration continued apace. Diplomacy was rather lackluster all around, not helped by the fact that the Protestant regions and cities within the empire degraded once it was clear Roman Catholicism would remain the state religion. Various cities are expanded across the realm while a few more road links are finally completed.
In year two, the Emperor received word that the City of Limoges was under attack. "By who?" he demands of his messengers, "The Pope!" they exclaim. With all the national armies gallivanting off elsewhere, the decision to respond or not had to wait.
The
Burgundian Empire
( Antwerp in Brabant )
Roman Catholic, Tech Level 009 - Renaissance
Emperor Gabriel Henry
Diplomacy and Warfare: Aachen [-EA] in Hainaut, Utrecht [-EA] in Halland, Cologne [-EA] in Lorraine [-EA]
Declaring for the Catholics, some influence is lost within the Protestant communities of Burgundy. Many new troops and fortifications are built for the nation, while the agro production is supplemented with new fishing fleets.

Slept.
The
Swiss Confederation
( Zurich in Switzerland )
Protestant Christian, Tech Level 010 - Renaissance
Over-Speaker Ulrich
Diplomacy and Warfare: Anglia [-YFC], Nottingham [EA] in Mercia, Switzerland [-EA]
Ulrich concentrated internally mainly, adding public works in Northumbria and keeping an eye toward the possibility of Religious conflict. He does bow to the will of the people, supporting the Protestant movement as the state religion. As a result some of the older noble families in Switzerland (who have remained Catholic) withdrew support from the nation. This did not get in the way of Ulrich expanding both wings of the government, however.
The
Austrian Empire
( Vienna in Austria )
Roman Catholic, Tech Level 009 - Renaissance
Emperor Otto I
Diplomacy and Warfare: Saarbrucken [N/E] in Alsace [EA], Bavaria [T], Gorizia [A] in Carinthia [F], Brno [FA] in Moravia
Otto continues to see to the reconstruction of the Empire, and continues to log successes everywhere except the city of Saarbrucken. Catholic radicals in Augsburg target the 'heretical' Protestant population for harassment, but are quickly subdued before any loss of life or faith can occur. One diplomat dies in Bavaria (though still manages to secure Tributary status) while the Duke of Carinthia also perishes, but bequeaths his lands to the crown (he had been childless).

The
Milanese Empire
(
Milan in Savoy )
Roman Catholic, Tech Level 010 - Renaissance
Godofredo Fiorello, Regent For
Emperor Augustus Sforza II
Diplomacy and Warfare: None.
Godofredo continued to oversee the dredging
project which finally resulted in the Po river being opened to mercantile trade.
Milan and Bergamo still have yet to build appropriate port capacity, but the
river is now navigable. An expedition into the Atlantic returned home brokenhearted
and reported a failure. No ships were lost, but no workable current maps gained
either.
The
Republic of Genoa
(
Genoa in Liguria )
Roman Catholic, Tech Level 009 - Renaissance
Doge Rufio
Diplomacy and Warfare: Cyprus [+YFC]
Diplomats concentrate on the conquered people of Cyprus and make some headway in smoothing things over. The Semi-Doge succumbs to old age, then the following year the Doge himself is killed during a minor riot which occurs during routine fire inspections in the seedier parts of Genoa city. Elections continue apace, and Rufio ascends.
The

Roman Catholic, Tech Level 010 - Renaissance
Doge Angelo
Diplomacy and Warfare: Ghadames [NT]
Reorganized the troops, added more fishing fleets, and picked up an Oasis.
The
Republic of Venice
(
Venice in Verona )
Roman Catholic, Tech Level 010 - Renaissance
Doge Hannibal
Diplomacy and Warfare: Crete [A], Kyklades, [N/E], Latium [F]
The Doge manages to secure a cooling of tempers with the Mamelukes over the farming community around Bianca on the Nile. Hannibal agrees to pull out his military forces and follows through. The state sees a mass of immigration from various Catholic refugees hailing from now-Protestant states, where the crown's stockpiled resources have drawn the hopes of many. Knossos, Durazzo, and Nexus being the focal points. Heavy investment into the University and Research and Development pays off.
The
Roman Catholic Papacy
(
Rome in Latium )
Roman Catholic, Tech Level 009 - Renaissance
Pope Innocent IX
Diplomacy and Warfare: Limoges [-UN] in Limousin, Gascony [CH]
Apparently bitter over the Protestant heresy, Innocent organizes a mercenary army and sends it into France under the leadership of the brilliant commander Robert the Black and under the flag of the Inquisition. The force rampages about the southern French lands, looting Protestant sites in Lyonnais, Auvergne, Limousin and Bayonne. Three different cities are assaulted (Limoges, Bayonne, and Toulouse) and conquered. Once pacified, the Catholic population is herded to Montpellier (which grows one level because of the refugees) while the Protestant population is slaughtered.

(

Russian Orthodox, Tech Level 009 - Renaissance
Grand Prince Casimir, Regent For
Emperor Yuri I
Diplomacy and Warfare: Bolgar [-HS], Levedia [+YFC], Patzinak [-UN], Polovotsy [-YFC]
Diplomacy is decidedly bad this cycle, perhaps because of the shakeup in the Royal family. Both Ivan and Crown Prince Anton dying in the cycle. Prince Casimir steps forward as regent for the young Emperor Yuri. Elsewhere, a postal road snakes from Seversk to Pereaslavl while Veposkava and Kalinin are funded for cultivation.
The
Russian Orthodox Primacy
(
Moscow in Muscovy )
Russian Orthodox, Tech Level 008 - Renaissance
Metropolitan Stephanos
Diplomacy and Warfare: Kirov [CH], Kostroma [-UN], Levedia [AB], Mordva [CH], Novgorod [CH], Polovotsy [CH], Seversk [-UN], Yaroslav [-UN],
Hemdel orders the shuffling of a few churches around, and the founding of a new abbey before dying late in the cycle in Moscow. Letters continue to be exchanged with Rome, and the results are minor but a step in the right direction of a reconciliation. It's hard to say how the Baptist and Protestant movements could affect this, however. Missionaries are dispatched to Torki once again.

The

Kemel Bey, Regent For
Sultan Dominus I
Diplomacy and Warfare: Athens [PT] then [Enslaved] in Attica, Sofia [NT] in Bulgaria, Istanbul [NT] in Constantinople, Dobruja [PT], Thessaloniki [PT] in Macedon, Trebizond [-AW] in Pontus
Kemel Bay marches the Ottoman host outside the walls of Athens. There he petitions the city to surrender, even offering a bribe to the city fathers. They spurn the idea, however, going so far as to dump the Ottoman gold into the bay. Kemel vows to enslave the entire populace if they remain obstinate. They do so, and he launches an attack on the city. It is over quickly, Kemel's skill at the siege masterful, and his forces overwhelming. He keeps true to his word, and spends the next few months rounding up the Athenians as human property. He marches this sorry host into Macedon, then on to the city of Thessaloniki. There he offers the same terms. Looking upon the chained Athenians, the city fathers surrender. Lord Abaza takes a small contingent into Dobruja, attacking a force over twice his size. The enemy commander falls in battle on the second day, and Abaza is able to sweep the field of resistance.
The
Persian Sultanate
(
Tehran in Persia )
Sunni Islamic, Tech Level 008 - Renaissance
Sultan Oxathres I
Diplomacy and Warfare: None.
Persia expends most of its effort toward founding a structure for the Sunni Islamic primacy to be founded upon. Jerusalem is the site chosen as the base, with more than four nations sending leaders to participate in the grand council (Persia, Ottomans, Mamelukes and Adal). Beyond that, two more road links were completed in Ahvaz and Persia.

Diplomacy continues apace in the desert city of Merv, while influence attempts between the two Islamic religions go nowhere.

The
Mameluke Sultanate
(
Q'arum in Mansura )
Sunni Islamic, Tech Level 009 - Renaissance
Sultan Hafas
Diplomacy and Warfare: None
The Mameluke Naval and Urban sections saw the most support this cycle, a sizable number of ships being drafted into the Nile fleet (while a few more ships were granted to the explorer Khuldun). Many cities were expanded, and two new fortresses popped up in Alexandria and Mansura. More trade (along with Sunni Clerics) are sent to India, while a decidedly more aggressive action is initiated to the south. Gathering up roughly 8,000 light cavalry and assorted mercenary forces, a slave raid is launched into the Ethiopian region of Alwa. The raid is successful, though doesn't yield terribly much in human currency.
| Said Ali has always been a professional warrior. His Sultan had sent him to far off lands in the East and given him troops to defend the homeland against infidels. He did not think of a wife because no woman had ever pounded in his heart the way a charging line of cavalry did. It came as almost as big of a shock to Said Ali as to all that knew him when he fell in love. Mufashira was not a young woman but Said Ali was not a young man either. He felt the pounding in his chest when he first saw her at a banquet thrown by the Sultan to welcome Said Ali from a successful campaign in India. They spent most of the banquet talking in the garden and both had forgotten to eat. The next morning Said Ali asked for and was provided with an audience with Sultan Hafas. Said Ali quickly asked to marry Mufashira and the Sultan was pleased. "Said Ali, you have been a friend since we both let armies for Muhammed Ali", said Hafas. "I grant you this marriage and the crown prince title to go along with it. You in turn must agree to be the regent for my young son Al' Aqubir", he added. Said Ali had already become smitten with the young prince and quickly agreed The ceremony was arranged and executed within 24 hours. |
Unfortunately, Said would die within the
year.

Sunni Islamic, Tech Level 006 - Civilized

The Empire is stunned when the Asante Horde rushes out of the Southern Jungles. Lacking a real National Army the Emperor can only hide in the capital of Ngazargumu.
