The
Republic of Florence
(
Florence in Tuscany )
Roman Catholic, Tech Level 010 - Renaissance
Doge Angelo
Diplomacy and Warfare: Cheliff [-UN]
Both the Doge and Semidoge pass away within weeks of each other, though elections run normally.
Six nations combine their naval forces: France, Portugal, Spain, Milan, Genoa and Florence, patrolling the Seas around Tripoli in case the Mamelukes should send any hostile fleets into the area. They spend the first year harassing all manner of Muslim shipping in the Mediterranean, but no armed ships are discovered. Late in the fall, a sudden and devastating series of storms catches the coalition fleet at sea. The losses are horrendous.
France: 54 ships lost, Prince Antoine lost
at sea. The remaining ships limp to Avignon.
Portugal: 90 ships lost. Princess Maria almost abandons the cause, but stays.
Lord Francisco is wounded.
Spain: 218 ships lost. Lords Theodoro and Jose both killed. The remnants shelter
in Lyssa.
Milan: 84 ships lost. Duchess Amadea is killed, Commander Astore missing. Survivors
return to Biaggia.
Genoa: 62 shops lost. Commander Flavio killed. The demoralized marines return
to Genoa.
Florence: 14 ships lost. Duke Caeser missing, while the new Doge Angelo is wounded.
Thus it is that only 16 ships remain in the area when a Mameluke fleet of 40 is spotted. Princess Maria, having taken overall command at this point, commands only 16 ships in the 'coalition.' She is faced with a hard choice, but the Mamelukes make it for her and simply run for it. They are able to outdistance the Coalition, and sail to the West.
The Mameluke Commander, Amini, resurfaces off the coast of Cheliff. He quietly unloads his troops into the region without alerting the Florentine garrison. He does not attack, but rather attempts to incite the people to rise up. They do not, and his efforts are reported to the garrison commander, Cosimo. Cosimo immediately sets out with his 1,000 man heavy elite force to confront the enemy.
Amini's men outnumber his, some 5,500 - including artillery, but Cosimo is the better commander. The battle could have gone either way, but Cosimo is a little too reckless with his force, and falls into a flanking trap and is wounded. He and his men withdraw into the city of Ceuta. The people of Cheliff throw off the yoke of Florintine pacification.
Amini is careful to make no claim on the region and sets about trying to convince Ceuta to revolt, even promising help. The city is cowed by Cosimo's presence, however, and takes no action.
