TURN 19 ORDERS DUE BACK BY Friday, 8 August, 1159pm to eddief6@ix.netcom.com

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GM COMMENTS

Lords 20 mail list: Kerry Harrison has offered his IPC's service to recreate the lords 20 mail list. Huzzah! Its at lords20@starjammer.com Everyone should be on it.

$2.00 Turns: Probably will happen sometime before Christmas. I gotta get CorelDraw7, MSAccess and the hardware to run it to take the next step in Lords Gm'ing. Hopefully my 45-day deployment to Germany this fall will pay for most of it (if I can restrain myself from drinking all my Hostile Fire Pay at Oktoberfest). I'll also be getting my own much larger website to hold all the files, and stop soaking up all of Chris Cornuelle's disk space at Minnesota U.

PROGRAM COMMENTS

Yet another new version, 3.1p, running apparently normally.

A note on roads and ports. After conversing with the program author (Tom), I learned that Royal Roads generated income can be calculated by the prog if and only if the cities in those regions have a "r" in their descriptor field. SO cities with a port and a royal road will be designated port cities. This gives the rightful boost to the International Trade value and International Trade Income, and I'll have to do some math gymnastics after all the processing is complete to make the Inter-City Income accurate.

I also learned why the support costs for roads and other MCs, and for troops too weren't being calculated. The support cost stats corresponding to this turn (19) should be in order. As usual, please advise if they appear not to be.

MAP NOTES

If you need maps, and can't get usable product from the .gif files online (the best map producers have been PaintShop Pro and Pagemaker), send me a check (10$ buys you the world here) and your mapset will go out that day priority mail. USnail service says it takes 1 to 3 days.

My USnail address:
Lords XX c/o Eddie Efsic
1200 Ferrell Dr.
Jacksonville, AR 72076

My phone number: Please don't waste your dime calling after 9 pm, since I often rise at 3 or 4 am to go fly, and I'm occasionally asleep by 9 pm.
(501) 985-3015

I'm in the process of assembling columns for the world, of which there will be eight. #1, #2, and #3 will be the new world. #4 through #8 will be old world. This have the very handy benefit of not requiring me to update several maps with each new city/road/fortress/MC/etc... Further advantage is the gain in resolution by reducing the original maps to only 50% instead of 33%. What I'd give for 128 Megs of RAM. Yet another good reason for $2.00 turns.

RULES ERRATA AND REMINDERS

Colonizing regions addition: All cultivated "c" regions may be colonized up to 2 GP value, if they are not already. Intensely cultivated "c2" regions may be colonized to 3 GP value.

Please read the rules addendum, on the Lords20 web site.

THE KHITAN HORDE
Mogwai, Thunder Lord
DIPLOMACY:none
North of the Great Wall of China and the weak-minded Parhae Khan, Khan Mogwai gathered to himself his own clansmen, those of surrounding Naiman, Khalaka, and Khingan, and more than a few nomads from once-proud Parhae. The rumors Chinese travelers had been spreading had come true.

UNITED STATES OF ASIA (JIHPEN)
Suiei Ma, President of Jihpen
DIPLOMACY:none
Jihpenese orders were absent. Again.

THE CH'IN KINGDOM
Liu Shaoshi, Divine Overlord of the Middle-Kingdom
DIPLOMACY: Chekiang (f), Kweichou (a)
Quian Lao died of an apoplectic seizure late in 976 and the condition must have been hereditary, because his heir Quian Shao wasn't on the deific seat of power for more than 7 months before he also died. The ensuing power struggle could have split the Kingdom in half, but of the only two contenders for power, one was away in Kweichou running diplomatic discussions with the leaders there. Lin Piao had the support of his new Kweichou ally, but by the time he could have returned, Liu Shaoshi had already consolidated his own influence over the much larger national army. Liu proclaimed his own ascendancy, and with the power of the army behind him, none could oppose him.

THE HONAN CHINESE KINGDOM
Mao Ling, Emperor of China
DIPLOMACY: Parhae (n/e)
"He will swear allegiance to me! It must be so. Return without such an oath, and perish."
Mao Ling refused to accept the Parhae Khan's offensive alliance as unsurpassable. If he were to only see my resplendence, certainly he would declare obeisance and allegiance! Mao sent his two aging diplomats out to gain a complete and total alliance, as a minimum. Both died in the tall grasses, in hopeless attempts to gain the allegiance of the Khan. Their only small comfort came from spending a little time with their Emperor's sister, now one of the several wives of the Khan. Mao Ling managed to have several children of his own back in the capitol Pienching, where he spent nearly all of his time these days.

THE SHENSI CHINESE KINGDOM
Cheng Ping, King of China
DIPLOMACY: none
No orders arrived from Shensi.

BACPHAN ZHUANGZU
Mao Liu Ven, Overlord of South China
DIPLOMACY: none
Huge sums of gold and manpower were invested in the improvements of the homeland and capitol, making it one of the finest places in the Orient, or even in the known world. Travelers from across the eastern world couldn't help but stare in awe at the tremendous irrigation canals, roads, and the monumental crops the local farmers could produce.

THE INCREDIBLY PEACEFUL CELESTIAL KINGDOM OF THE JADE BUDDHA

THE KATOOMBA RIDERS
Yamma Samma, Chief He'e Nalu
DIPLOMACY: none
The Yamma stayed home trying to figure out a name for the new Toohey's brew.
"I've got it! Lets hold a contest so that the little people can have a say in the new Toohey's."
When he said "little" people, he meant everybody except his wife, since everybody was little when compared to his leviathanic spouse.

So with a great fanfare, he announce the contest to all the little people. The only hints were it was dark yellow ("amber", he called it), smooth, really easy to drink, and even easier to forget exactly how many coconuts full one has already imbibed.

"Such a divine drink, some will probably worship it", remarked his slender son Damma. And hearing the prize of the contest would be a colossal basket full of coconuts of the new brew, he set off to ponder his own entry.

THE UZE HORDE
Sengir, Khakhan,
DIPLOMACY: Khirgiz (a), Osman (a)
Khakhan Sengir traveled north and east from his home near the shores of the Caspian Sea, and enroute visited and gained the alliance of two other nomadic tribal leaders. Deep in the heart of Asia, far from the influence of any civilized plow sharing wonks, Sengir contemplated the All, and his role in the world.

EMPIRE OF THE LOWER GANGES
Akasi, Guardian of the Ganges, Divine Wrath of Kali
DIPLOMACY: Samatata (n/e)
Narayanapala set out to expand the outlying cities of his lands, Maghadara in Assam, Shivana "The Destroyer's City) in Gtsang, and Bhuphaala in Samatata. He also decided to make a lasting impression on the mass of slaves in the Empire by freeing them, until he was informed of the crippling effect it would have on the economy. Figures of just how much time, energy and gold would have to be spent in making such a dream come true for the slaves were so high, the Emperor had a heart attack on the spot. His son Akasi assumed the office of the Emperor, and put such silly notions well out of his mind. He had plenty of things to keep his slaves busy with, for decades to come.

XANTHI EMPIRE OF XANADU
Yotan, Grand Poobah of the Xanthi Zieterund
DIPLOMACY: Uttar Pradesh (fa), Jihjoti (f)
Prince Dariko was in Nasik, wooing the royalty there into joining the Xanthi Empire, and even arranged the marriage of the Royal Prince Liukan to one of the natives of Nasik. Dariko's death wasn't totally unexpected, though, as he was getting on in years. What was unexpected by the Nasik royalty and by the Xanthi leadership was the shellacking the Nasik people received after declining the Cholan King's offer of alliance. A new sea trade route was established with the Abbasids through the Persian Gulf, and a new city (Jenni) was founded in Tarain, while smooth broad roads were carved from the capitol Xanth to Thanesar, and then on to Amchan.

THE INDUS VALLEY KINGDOM
Mushtaq, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus
DIPLOMACY: Punjab (a)
The Mansurashah figured to increase hi own revenues by expanding his capitol, and enticing more trade goods to be imported exported, and most importantly, taxed. Plans were laid, and funds began to be allocated for a new road from the capitol Mansura to Mahendrabad. A big part of the plans was for some serious slave labor, and Mushtaq sent his Admiral Imrahn out aboard his fleet of warships to get the slaves, and transports with which to bring them back. Deplorably for him, the natives of Muscat and Zufar were militant enough, and Imrahn's own forces small enough to make capture of more than a few dozen slaves unattainable. He returned from the Arabian Coasts to bring his liege the news of ferocious fighters and their open preference for death before surrender or capture.

THE CHOLA MANDALAM
Arou, Mandala Chola
DIPLOMACY: Tu Wei: "I got yer diplomacy, pal, right here..."
The aging Arou decided his time was done, in the matter of begetting another son, and arranged the wedding of his eldest daughter to Tu Wei, one of his more accomplished leaders. While Tu Wei wasn't Arou's most skilled henchman, he wasn't without intelligence, and he did see many things in life similarly to Arou. After the wedding, Tu Wei was declared the heir to Arou's power, and then sent to gather the garrisons of the land into a coherent national army. Without an army to back him up, Arou's chief diplomat Apamo had gone to Nasik and the city Kalyani to vie for their allegiance to the Mandala Chola Arou. What he found was a royal wedding to the Xanthi Prince Dariko, and a short, succinct decline to engage in a alliance of any kind with the Cholans. He left them with the advice that they had made a mistake, and promptly returned to Kollam to give their reply to Arou. Tu Wei's test of loyalty came when he was instructed to gain the wealth of Nasik and Kalyani for Arou. He and his 9,000 horsemen and 3,000 supporting infantry invaded. While the Nasik nobility had defenses of their own, they were no match for the invaders, and after several skirmishes and the short siege at Kalyani, the Nasik royalty were executed and the Nasik populace placed firmly under the Cholan heel.

IMAM MUSLIM
Shefah, Siadat Kuran, "The Visionary"
DIPLOMACY: none
Koshtan sent his priests far and wide to spread the Light of Allah to the world, and they organized and established religious sites on both side of the Mediterranean Sea. Koshtan didn't live long enough to see his plans come to bear fruit, though. His successor, one known to see future events in his dreams, became the next "Holder of the Truth, Bearer of the Light, and Destroyer of the Infidels".

THE ABBASID CALIPHATE
Mahtaub, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
DIPLOMACY: none
Plans for the expansion of all the major cities had to be pared back, as tax revenues failed to flow into Mahtaub's coffer as he expected them to. Bushehr and Raja both expanded, as the Kaliph struggled to find ways of getting the most out his small governmental framework, and making it effectively govern much more space than it was ever designed to.

THE MAHMUD GHAZNI PERSIAN KINGDOM
Ghaseb Pesar, Sahib, Kophatshah
DIPLOMACY:Bactria (t), Khwarzim (f)
Ghaseb continued to prepare for the coming of one or more hordes, and was relieved to hear news from far travelers that the Kucha Khan and his allies had traveled into the far northwest of the continent, and would probably be little threat to him or his people. Such great news was effectively nullified by further news from the same messengers that there were other nomadic hordes milling about in the great northern steppes, and there were no guarantees that any one (or more than one) of them wouldn't come crashing through his newly regained lands and loot and plunder all of his valuables. He continued to hire and train more warriors.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PAPACY
John XIV, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, Successor to the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the Papal States, and Servant of the Servants of God
DIPLOMACY:none
Some financial and administrative assistance went to Edward, King of England, but the vast majority of the gold leaving Rome went west to Catalonia to the newly recognized King of Spain. Pope Benedict died in the summer of 976, and Cardinal Lucci was elevated to the Holy See, largely due to the demise of all the other likely candidates. The prominent member of the Sacred College of Cardinals left behind his birth name and assumed the Papacy as John XIV.

THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE
Dore Eclat, Duke of Orleans, King of France
DIPLOMACY: none
In a move to stave off recession, King Demetre orders gold shipments to the banks of the realm, both Christian and Jewish, and focused his expenditures on continued economic growth incentives. His death in 977 AD left a power void, and having no children to pass the Kingdom to, it was left to the minor nobility to make what claims they could. After almost a year and a half of internal backfighting, Dore Eclat, the Duke of Orleans pressed his own claim and ascended to the throne in Paris.

THE DANISH KINGDOM
Swain Adalsson, Rex Danmark
DIPLOMACY: Westphalia (f)
New cities were growing in Danish lands, Hamburg in Holstein, and Goteborg in Halland. King Swain assumed the personal command of the national Danish Army, and sent underlings to retrieve the newly nationalized Lorraine garrison. Departing the region, news came from Jutland that King Swain had relinquished all influence in Lorraine to the King of Poland, and the Lorraine garrison, then on its way to the capitol Gormavn, deserted en masse. Within three days, less than 5 percent of the original 8,000 men bound for Gormavn remained loyal to Denmark. One who did remain loyal to the Dane King was the Duke of Westphalia, who declared allegiance to the King Swain after marrying his daughter to the Danish heir.

THE LOMBARD KINGDOM OF ITALY
Luigi d' Orsini, Rex Sognari
DIPLOMACY none
King Luigi made trade agreements with both the English and the Danes, using the port city Heidelburg as the import and export center for Italians with goods coming from and going to the northern Kingdoms. The fleets heading towards ports of call throughout the Med were expanded as well. The Italians reorganized their national army as well, placing the overwhelming majority under the personal command of King Luigi.

THE KINGDOM OF SUSSEX ENGLAND
Edward II, Saxon King of England
DIPLOMACY: Mercia (a)
The Saxon Edward made his preferences clear in the Spanish/Cordovan civil war, by accepting aid and gold from the Catholic Pope, and sending it (with some extra of his own) straight to the Cordovan Caliph. New trade routes were established with the Catholic Italians and the Muslim Moroccans, proving that the universality of the language of gold. On the far western tip of the Island Kingdom, the port city of Penzance was founded .

KINGDOM OF SPAIN
Jesus Maquina, King of Spain
DIPLOMACY:no effect
Shortly after the Spanish victory in the Riojas, Yasir contracted pneumonia.
"I guess I'm too old to be sleeping on the ground," he joked with his sons. "You must carry on the fight after I am gone."

Diego, the youngest, was heartstricken to see his father in a sick bed. "We will not let you down, father."

"No, brother. We do not do this for one man," his elder brother Jesus corrected. "The infidels have committed crimes against God, and for that they must pay. We will not rest until the task is complete, father." Yasir smiled, and drifted off to sleep.

They buried the king near the place of his birth. Pamplona was a sleepy little mountain town in the Rioja range. Dignitaries in town for the funeral witnessed a curious spectacle: bulls were released to run through the streets, and many brave men raced on foot at the head of the charge. At the funeral, the new king Jesus addressed the assembled masses:
"There are many similarities between our nation and the running of the bulls. The infidels may chase us from our homes, spreading terror and destruction, but we will endure. Eventually, we know, the tide will turn, and we will master the beast. My friends, we have run that race. Now it is time to draw our swords and strike back!"

UMMAYAD CALIPHAT AL CORDOBA
Achmed Nasir, Caliph al Cordoba, Infidel's Bane
DIPLOMACY:none
Achmed regrouped his men , along with the Moroccans, back in Murcia, in preparation for their next attempt to rid the peninsula of the Christian heretics. Having spent lavishly of his own and Moroccan gold, he attracted almost 30,000 men-at-arms, spearmen, cavalry, and sappers. The one man he wanted most, though, the Frenchman Adrien Beaufort declined his offer and became part of the opposition.

It was north and west he sent his new army, while a smaller force invaded Asturias for the second time from Navarre. Asad's General Jafir and 5,000 footmen enterred Asturias early in 976, and were pummeled back by the Christian Spaniards. In fact, Jesus Maquina and the Spanish army of 20,000 footmen and 2,000 horsemen took Navarre and then Catalonia from the Cordovans, and used their swords to pacify the regions and convert them back to Catholicism. This bold Spanish attack had a drawback, however, in that it left the Asturias wide open for Muslim attack, and attack they did. Achmed placed the bulk of his armed forces in the hands of General Hassan, and sent him, his 38,000 men, and 29,000 mercenaries to take Asturias by way of Galacia, and they accomplished this with little trouble. The Cordovan diversion had succeeded in drawing the Spanish army from Asturias, but taking Asturias didn't solve the problem of 20,000 Christian soldiers.

The Cordovans had no armed fleet though, and paid dearly for it. Although the Moroccans had faster warships, their encounter with marauding Italian warships left them with no choice but to retreat or be destroyed. This left the Italians, who were inexplicably flying French colors, free to raid the Iberian coasts at will. Valencia, Granada, and Andalusia all suffered raids, and the Cordovan island possessions in the Baelerics were also robbed. Having gotten quite wealthy at the expense of the rural Muslim commoners (the port cities of Seville and Madeira had nice big walls to keeps out the "sea dogs"), the Christian pirates landed and shared their rich take with King Jesus in Catalonia.

MERC LEADERSPohznah Koshkov MA47

THE POLISH KINGDOM
Orouin I, King of Poland
DIPLOMACY: Austria (nt), Bohemia (nt), Galatia (t), Thuringia (a), Alsace (c), Pomern (c)
King Orouin gathered most of his armies unto himself, similarly to some of his western counterparts, and sent his remaining units into the Baltic states to round up more slaves. A few of the targeted regions put up stiff resistance and, only about half of his original forces returned healthy from the campaign. Which was really unfortunate, because they would certainly come in handy right about now, with nearly 200,000 screaming pagans camped out in Prussia. Merchants began traveling south to Egypt, and west to France for profits (or safety, no one really knows except themselves).

VOSSTA BRODEET
Vostov Borislov, Prince of Prussia
DIPLOMACY: none
'How to make enemies and influence people'
This was the manual for governing which Prince Vostov was using as his model for the relocated Russians in the heart of the West Asian steppes. With the bulk of the Uze population gone north and east, the elderly and homebodies of the Uze tribe was all that remained actually in Uze. So Prince Vostov sent in his own men, to round up what few remained, and carted them back to Saksiny as slaves. A new merchant fleet was built to trade with their northern cousins in Novgorod, but the picture those merchants painted of their ancient home was very, very ugly, and they refused to sail upriver ever again, for any price.

KUCHA HORDE
Mishrak, Kucha Khan, "The Black Demon"
DIPLOMACY:none
Jasmir, Mishrak's son and heir, led the tribes further west and north each day for months, chasing the setting sun into Novgorod lands. Russian agents attempted to bribe off the Khan's allies, but were unsuccessful in their offers. In this context, unsuccessful meant they lost their bribe purses along with their arms, legs, and heads. Khan Mishrak smelled fear in Novgorod, and he meant to make their worst fears come true.

THE NOVGOROD KINGDOM (Dead)
Ivan Vaslov, "The White Fist"
DIPLOMACY: none
King Ivan sent a token force out on the standard slaving runs, while maintaining over 50,000 men in the main garrison of the Kingdom. It was much, much too few to deal with the force of nature which came form the steppes south and east of his lands. Khan Mishrak's 35,000 Mongol allies were the first invaders to enter the Novgorodi homeland, and Ivan was surprised, and overcome with joy when his own footmen repelled them.

Outnumbered better than 5 to 1 by faster, better skilled and equipped troops, Ivan knew he wasn't going to win an open engagement with the horde. So he figured to take them out one group at a time. Chasing the Mongols was a big mistake, as they were led right into the rest of the main horde, numbering nearly 200,000 strong. This "fight" wasn't even a fight. The Russians were butchered by the nomadic cavalry. The Novgorodi homeland became the winter quarters for the Kucha horde, but the cold did in both of Mishrak's allies. Their forces refused to follow or fight for Mishrak or his son, and left with the spring, but the Kucha were just getting warmed up.

The populace of the Novgorodi capitol actually thought they were going to be able to get on with their lives, since the horde didn't take over the city right after their army's massacre. But the horde was just waiting for warmer weather. After the first main thaw, Mishrak turned his men loose on the Russian homeland, looting everything in sight. The capitol Tallinn was next, sacked for all of it's valuables, and burned to the ground. In about the only manner which things could be made worse, Mishrak ordered his men to kill all the Russians they could find. The genocidal slayings lasted nearly a year, after which the "Demon Khan", as he became known, led his men into defenseless Estonia, where the looting, sacking, and burning continued. At the end of 980 A.D., the horde camped in Prussia for the winter, rich and well fed.

PRINCIPATE OF KIEV RUS
Yaroslav, Grand Prince of Kiev
DIPLOMACY: Pereaslavl (fa), Mordva (fa), Murom (nt)
The Kiev King Yaroslav, sent commands to his forges to make stronger, heavier armor for his men, and trained his footmen to carry the newer, stronger armor into battle. International relations began with the renegade Novgorodi in Saksiny, and an ill wind blew from the north, as relations from the Novgorod Kingdom ceased to exist with the signal death of that people.

THE BYZANTINE ROMAN EMPIRE
Leo, Roman Emperor of the East
DIPLOMACY: Psidia (a), Morea (f), Dobruja (a), Bulgaria (nt)
Leo and his Field General Andoniku Comnenos went into Europe to fetch the presently leaderless European Army, and Andonikus remained there to continue the religious conversion of the locals to the gentle teachings of Christ. Leo returned to the army to Thrace, where he met general Doukas and , and Prince Hector and his forces to make ready to battle whatever horde felt obliged to come that way. On the way there Leo married his son Justin off to the nobility of Bulgaria.

THE CALIPHATE AL MORAVID
Yusif ali Babar, "Zaban Nogreh"
DIPLOMACY: Malta (a), Kabilya (a)
While on the Iberian peninsula, the Cordovan army and navy met with mixed success in Asturias and in the Gulf of Lyon, the other leaders of Morroco had successes of their own in Afriqa. The Morroccan heir Siddig al Faroud was wed in Kabliya, and hence gained a powerful ally for his father, while Caliph Yusif sent Prince Joaquim to patrol the Aegean waters for potential enemies. The menacing fleet under the command Joaquim was sorely missed by Caliph Yusif's Sardinian ally.

THE FATAMID EMPIRE
Pesar el Madir, Guardian of the Holy Places
DIPLOMACY: none
Desperate for administrative aid, the Fatamid Emperor requested and recieved aid from the Muslim Imam in Mecca. Pesar's military readiness was unquestionable, with his wall dividing Asia and Afriqa, but the forces behind it were left without a commander when in 979 Emir Sala benin Adir expired from the heat. The military life was too rugged for his 59 year-old bones, and urgent pleas for a replacement were sent to Al-Iskandariyah.

THE SONGHAI HERDSMEN
Bakele Kersil
DIPLOMACY: Adwaghost (t), Senegal (ea)
Bakele happily formally announced his heir, Osei, and set about to see just how many subjects he had. The process wasn't quite as easy as he had figured, though, and he found he would have to pay handsomely for all the people required to make such a count an accurate one. The cities of Gao and Timbuctu were each expanded, although the merchants favored Gao as their home port. Bakele expected this, seeing as it was closer to the sea, and plying upriver all the way to Timbuctu was a long and difficult journey for any merchant.

THE HIDDEN KINGDOM OF THE KONGO (HKK)
M'Toko Bakele, King of the Dark
DIPLOMACY:Chokwe (a), Gagnoa (c), Lui (t), Matadi (a)
The Dark King ordered the foundation of a city named after himself in the wilds of Togo, while sending his diplomats out to gain more allies in his quest to rule the world. He expanded his capitol Kinshasa again, now the largest city in Afriqa, more grandiose even than Al-Iskandariyah in far away Egypt.

KINGDOM OF NIGERIA
Roakum, King of Benin
DIPLOMACY: Kwararafa (ea), Douala (t)
Roakum followed the example of his northern neighbor, pushing the edges of his influence out by diplomacy, but in contrast, Roakum had to do most of the diplomatic maneuvering on his own. Fortunately for him, he was most skilled a exactly that. Financial ties were established both in the regions immediately north and east of the homeland, with political alliances certain to follow in good time.

THE KINGDOM OF TCHAD
Djenabo, "The Pitiless One", Omar Kanembu
DIPLOMACY: none
IN a move to make internal movement more available, and the land more fertile for economic growth, Djenabo set forth a plan for a new road network connecting the cities. In under four years, Tillaberi was linked to Zaria, and Ngazargumu was connected to Sikasso. Back in the capitol, the Omar Kanembu ordered the expert training of his palace guard, but they couldn't meet their lord's unrealistically high expectations.

THE PAINTED WOLF TRIBES (ZIMBABWE)
Breanor, Shaka Zulu
DIPLOMACY: none
The Chief of the Painted Wolves also made a network of roads linking hi own inland cities, but these were a step beyond the measures taken by the Kanembu far to the north. Breanor decreed these roads would be wide straight, and demanded of his police they be kept free of bandits and robbers. And they were, after large sums of gold were spent in the hiring and training of patrols.

THE AZTEC EMPIRE:
Ometepec, God-Emperor, Divine Ruler of Mexico
DIPLOMACY:Culhua (f), Tarascan (a)
Still only a boy, Ometepec ruled ineffectively from the capitol. His advisors were able, however, to get several things accomplished on behalf of their divine ruler. The city Tlacopan was expanded out under the direction of Zertrap, and associated diplomatic talks gained the Boy-Emperor the allegiance of the Culhua leaders. After only two cycles of the seasons, Zertrap died in Culhua. The capitol city Mitla was expanded up. The surrounding walls, that is. Way up.

THE MAYAN ASTRONOMERS

Long wide roads throughout the Empire were extended to reach Tarma Tambo, the capitol expanded again, and a new city was built around the port fortress in Chimu. The Celestial Emperor named it Tumbes, after a vision he observed one late night, high on the Royal Observatory.

ANASAZI
Arikara, Chief Executive of the High Desert
DIPLOMACY:Tahue (c)
The new Chief Executive of the Anasazi People found his job less exciting than he thought he would, and wished fervently he could be out exploring the lands surrounding the Anasazi people instead of running the relatively boring details of state. His leaders were out exploring, and a new colony was sent out to explore and settle in Tonkawa.

THE SONOMA KINGDOM
Striking Wolf, King of Sonoma
DIPLOMACY: none
The Sonoma King also stayed in his capitol and ran the affairs of state, while having time for a family life as well. His wife bore him three fine children, and he spent a growing percentage of his time in the company of his infant children. In economic matters, each and every on e of the nations five major cites expanded, Albion, Tharsi, Ursa Minoris and Majoris, and the capitol Mokelumne.

THE IROQUOIS NATION
Talon, Prime Chief of the Council
DIPLOMACY: Chatot (f)
A land trade route was finally blazed through to the Anasazi capitol far to the west, and ship units previously used to carrying Anasazi goods to the Iroquois people were assigned to take their trade south to the sun worshipping bronzed Azteca. Massive downsizing of the military allowed Ayoel and the capitol Adena to expand once again, creating more dock space on the banks of the Great Snake.
