TURN 2 ORDERS DUE BACK BY 19 Jul, 1159 pm to eddief6@ix.netcom.com
ANNOUNCEMENTS
GM COMMENTS
On a work note, the USAF is sending me to Turkey for 6 weeks (12 Jul to 1 Sep) as I thought they might. This isn't the bad news it could be though, because of the wonders of the Internet, I plan on getting online when I get there. I'll be taking a laptop computer and all of your email addresses, and connecting from Adana, Turkey, as soon as I can. Look for words from me on or about 15 Jul.
If you're confused about the turn numbers, it's because I didn't number the first stats and fax as turn 0 like I should have. This is the turn #1 newsfax and stats will accompany tomorrow (Mon 8 Jul) eve.
PROGRAM COMMENTS
Stats should be a slight improvement over last turn, because I figured all the NFP income and wrote it in each stat sheet. No no should have a "1" for NFP this turn. Just tell me if you think I calculated yours wrongly.
However, HAL is still not cooperating on support costs or Agro production. I'm in communication at this time with Tom Harlan trying to resolve these problems, but until it works right, I humbly request each player to calculate their own Agro and (troop, govt and project) support costs. The agro formulas are on p.16 and the support costs are descibed in good detail on pp.14,15 of the rulebook. I'm distributing a new standardized order form which will mesh a little better with the program, and hopefully cut a few hours off my order processing routine. Many thanks for your understanding.
MAP NOTES
Some Capitols are not on the maps, All Capitols listed on the players.txt file actually exist even if they're not on the map. As soon as I buy some more RAM, I'll be able to edit the .gif maps to keep them resonably (read not every turn) updated. What this means is please send your checks in if you haven't already.
If you still need maps, and can't get usable product from the .gif files online (the best map producers have been PaintShop Pro and Pagemaker), send me a check (10$ buys you the world here) and your mapset will go out that day priority mail. USnail service says it takes 1 to 3 days. I'll be in close communication with my wife from July 26th until I return, so I can advise her on how to get these to you when she gets the checks.
RULES ERRATA AND REMINDERS
Tithe Income: If you are paying a tithe to a Religious Primate and the rate of the tithe is less than or equal to 5% then there is no effect to you; you do not lose any money. If the rate of the Tithe is greater than 5%, then you lose 1% of Tax Rate for each percentage point of the tithe over 5.
If you are the Primate recieving the tithe, then the tithe money is automatically calculated for you and added to your Saved Gold each turn by the program.
Imperial Size Minimum: Each nation will always have an Imperial Size of at least one (1). There is no maximum.
Bidding on Mercs: When you are making a bid for mercenaries, please make separate bids for mercenary units and mercenary leaders.
TROOP CONVERSIONS
Infantry (500 men = 1 point), Cavalry (500 men = 1 point), Siege Engineers (500 men = 1 point), Warships (5 ships = 1 point), Transports (5 ships = 1 point)

UNITED STATES OF ASIA (JIHPEN)
Tenno Daigo, President
DIPLOMACY: Aichi (a), Kwanto (a), Saga (nt), Shimane (t)
The Japanese executive leaders were abuzz in the field diplomacizing, while the national budget went hard to work at expanding the governments abilities.
EMPIRE OF KOGURYO
Wang Kon
DIPLOMACY: none
The Koreans were notably lacking in leadership qualities.
THE WU YUE CHINESE KINGDOM
Quian Qui, God-Emperor of the Middle-Kingdom
DIPLOMACY: Anhui (ne), Hubei (a), Taiping (fa), Szechwan (c)
The Wu Yue King was happy to see such a large harvestof rice from his gields, and he also took his leaders into the field, expanding his influence.
THE HONAN CHINESE KINGDOM
Zhu-Wen, Emperor of China,
DIPLOMACY: Tsainan (t), Bao Ding (c)
Zhu Wen's queen finally gave birth to an heir for him. Proud papa went off to Tsainan for some diplomatic tallks, although they weren't as responsive as Zhu would ave liked. The Bao Dingians also agreed not to join any other kingdoms (for now).
THE SHENSI CHINESE KINGDOM
Li Keyong, The One-Eyed Dragon
DIPLOMACY: Chinling (nt), Houma (n/e), Huang (c)
The Shensi people were also happy to have an heir to their kingdom. Li managed to also set up several trade agreements between his rather ineffective stints at diplomacy. Being such a wise fellow, and ever committed to education, Li also founded the Keyong University in Chang'an, investing a sizable chunk of the budget.
THE KWANGSI CHINESE KINGDOM
Liu Xiang
DIPLOMACY: none
Liu... was non-directive this turn.

EMPIRE OF THE LOWER GANGES
Narayanapala, His Imperial Majesty, Guardian of the Ganges
DIPLOMACY: Nadavaria (nt), Assam (c), Gtsang (c)
Narayanapala supevised the construction of several more merchant fleets to get him ever more and more money, and told his slaves to get to work on hose irrigation ditches. They were pokey for the first year or so, but when the monsoons washed away all their houses, they decided to work a little faster. He also went on some diplomacy trips, but didn't spend enough time in any one place, (he has responsibilities, after all), to be very effective.
THE UNITED MONARCHY OF THE AVANS
Narathu Hsiapaw, King of all Burmese Peoples
DIPLOMACY: Thaton (ea), Arakan (nt)
Narathu's actions oddly resembled those of Narayanapala. He continued expanding his kingdom by spending some time in the field, but with only limited effect. His ally from Samatata was also a-roamin'.
THE JAVAN KINGDOM
Manu Bharana, President Srivjavan, Lord of the Seas
DIPLOMACY:Perak (f), Jambi (nt)
For his second term in office, Manu wanted more international contacts, so he funded the construction of some shiny new sea ships and docks to tie them to. They looked so nice there, he didn't want to send them to sea. They might get lost, you know? Certainly they would get all salty and dull... But his advisors convinced him that no, they would not get rich by keeping the ships at home. So off they went, in search of... er, things. Manu himself then went to Perak, who recieved him very nicely, while the Vice Prez went to visit some folks closer to home.
THE EMPIRE OF CHAMPA
Palpatyn, Emperor Viet
DIPLOMACY: Phan Rang (nt), Khemer (t)
Jayasimhavarman looked withenvious eyes at the rich Mekong Valley of the Khemer peoples, and said to himself, "It would be real cool if I could live there...". So he moved. They were happy to call him by his new, Khemer name "Palpatyn", when he said he would move his capitol there and build some nice irrigation channels for them. While his Cochin ally made the neccesary preparations, Palpatyn was off tromping around the regions north and west of Khemer raiding for gold and slaves, which he brought back to his new house.
THE MAAORI SEAHOLD
Palaau Halmahera, Son of Sea and Sky
DIPLOMACY: Sabah (ne), Truk (fa), Marianas (t)
Palaau was hard at work sailing off to conduct more diplomacy, returning occasionally to try and have a "Son of the Son of Sea and Sky". He recieved another daughter from his beloved, but no son yet. Word on the beaches is that there's something in the water keeping thme from having an heir...
THE KATOOMBA RIDERS
Yamma Yamma,
DIPLOMACY:Taree (a)
Yamma decided it was time for something new, something bold,... maybe something blue. So he labeled the last recipe "Toohey's Old", and went to work on a new batch. He then went off to Taree, thinking to find himself a wife, until his advisors cornered him and proved he already had one. That wasn't about to stop him, however, so he made a new law, which said, basically, that all Katoomba kings can have two wives, from now on. His first queen wasn't too happy with this new law, but kept her wits about her, figuring that one of her two sons would almost certainly be Yamma next.

Mahendrapala, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus
DIPLOMACY: Sind (ne), Baluch (ea), Kutch (nt)
Mahendrapala assumed the title King, and renamed his Principate to match. He also commanded the construction of more trade ships and roads in his homeland. Then he and his Sind ally went off to spread the word, with varying effects.
THE RAJPUT KINGDOM OF INDIA
Krisnaraja II, Lord of the River, Life-Giver
DIPLOMACY: none
Krisnaraja's instructions were nowhere to be found.
THE CHOLA MANDALAM
Aditya
DIPLOMACY: none
The Cholan King did very little.
THE ABBASID CALIPHATE
Hazar al' Mutatid, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
DIPLOMACY: Hahmar (t), Abadan (nt)
Hazar spent a little more cash and expanded the already expansive mecca called Bagdad. The temple domes stretch as far as the eye can see. Hazar claims he wants a city so large it takes a full day to walk from one side to the other. Then he went down the Euphrates River (again) to Hahmar and Abadan to do a little diplomacy.
THE MAHMUD GHAZNI PERSIAN KINGDOM
Ismail ibn Ahmad, Kophatshah, Earthshaker
DIPLOMACY: Kara-Khitai (a), Turkmen (f), Khwarzim (fa)
The Kophatshah invested some dough in getting a more effective government, and funded the formation of the University ibn Ahmad in Merv. He and his honor guard then rode north to assimilate the Turkmeni into the kingdom, while his allies were out telling everyone what a really nice guy Ismail was, getting him even more allies.

PRINCIPATE OF KIEV RUS
Oleg, Knyaz Kiev
DIPLOMACY:Polotsk (ea), Chernigov (nt), Pechneg (h), Atelzuko (c)
The Russian Prince ordered the trade ships to get to work trading. After all, even a Principate requires money to get by, and just because he's the Knyaz doesn't mean he doesn't have bills too. Then he too went to a lot of neighboring regions, extolling the benefits of being part of the great Kiev organization. For the most part, he was recieved warmly enough, except for those thugs from Pechneg. Apparently, he said something which pissed them off but good, and he decided to continue on his merry way before they decided to pick a fight with him and his troops, although he probably could have whipped em. Meanwhile, back at Kiev, his Lieutenant in charge, Pietr, was maintaining an ever watchful eye to the south, and soaking up some nice rays too.
THE POLISH KINGDOM
Piast I, Palota Polski
DIPLOMACY:Not this time...
Piast traipsed through Poland on his way to Little Poland, and said he would take tribute from them in return for "protection". They weren't amenable to the idea, so he thumped em. They didn't really have a chance of beating the Kauyavians, but to their credit, they managed to knock a few of Piast's guys unconscious. Their only real victory was that Piast had to leave more than half his troops there to collect the tribute and keep the Little Poles from revolting. After having enough of war for a while, Piast returned to Warzau to rule his people.
THE KINGDOM OF SERBIA
Arpad Aggodom
DIPLOMACY:Thessaly (c)
Arpad watched closely the walls of Heraclea and looked to the east where he was expecting the Byzantines to attack from. He was glad to see no attack coming right away, as it gave his General Mikhel time to bring cavalry reinforcements, to total his army at right around 23,000 men, of varying types. While no ground attack came from the Byzantines, Arpad was greeting Mikhel and his drafted reinforcements and saw a significant group of transport ships sail west through the Dardanelles. The Byzantine troops in Heraclea took Leo's confidence in them to heart, and put a few more bricks and supports on their walls, preparing for the worst.
Which was not long in coming. In the spring of 901, Arpad ordered the walls around Heraclea be destroyed and the city taken. After 147 days of siege, the Byzantine fleet sailed back east through the Dardanelles on its way to Constantinople, flying 3 different national flags, but didn't stop to load the handful of remaining loyal defenders. Already bathed in the blood of their comrades and enemies, the Heraclean (Herculean?) defenders took that message to heart too, and resolved to fight to the end. Although there were stories of heroism and valor on both sides of the walls, the lack of a capable commander in Heraclea was its downfall. The Serbs attacked with renewed determination, figuring time was now agianst them, and captured the severely damaged city 4 days later.
Figuring it was only a matter of time before Leo came at him, Arpad commanded the battered rubble of the city walls be stacked in some kind of defense, in case he wanted to force Leo to command a siege as he had.
THE BYZANTINE ROMAN EMPIRE
Leo VI, the Wise, Occidental Roman Emperor
DIPLOMACY:Who has time for Diplomacy?
Leo was saddened, but not surprised to see the smoke rising from the once-beautiful city of Heraclea as he sailed his flagship through the Dardanelles, but also intensely pround of the defenders there. He knew Arpad was a capable field general, and wished bitterly he had a general with such skills. His voyage to assemble the combined forces of the Lombards and Papal troops went without incident, but he counted the hours along the whole trip. Sailing past Heraclea, he knew the city was lost, and continued to Constantinople to combine his allied troops with the Byzantine national army.
In the spring of 902, Leo led his now-international army into Thrace to evict Arpad and the Serbs. The two opposing armies met on the fields of battle in Thrace, and didn't waste any time with words. Leo's army had the slight advantage in numbers, with nearly 28,000 men from 4 nations, but Arpad was clearly the better tactician. The Battle of Thace in 902 AD saw the two armies clash to a stalemate again and again, with no quarter asked nor recieved. Figuring they were all that protected the once-might Byzantine Empire from extinction, Leo knew he could ill aford to back down. Arpad knew he was in poor opinion across at least half the Med, and thought (rightly) he would be followed and attacked again if he lost on these now blood-soaked fields.
After both sides losing too many men to count, Arpad's tactics forced Leo to retreat to Constaninople, with just over 3,000 horsemen left from his original army. Arpad had no horsemen and just under 3,000 foot soldiers remaining, but saw this as a window of opportunity, and didn't want to let Leo escape after all his efforts. Leo ran out of room to retreat on the peninsula of Constantinople, but refused to surrender the city to Arpad, so they much reduced armies met again on the fields outside the Byzantine capitol. Leo again had numbers on his side, and a mounted force to oppose Arpad, and lost about half his men, before eliminating the last of the Serb army. Leo ordered his men to search for days for Arpad and Mikhel, but with such a severe shortage in manpower, the two Serb generals escaped capture. There are rumors of Mikhel being seen in Thessaly, so Arpad was assumed still alive, and still King in Ochirida.

THE SAXON KINGDOM OF SUSSEX
Edward I, Saxon King of England
DIPLOMACY: Wessex (f)
Edward continued his discoure with the Duke of Wessex, and got him to swear fealty to the Saxon Kingdom. Meanwhile, he invested his budget in roads and bridges back in Sussex, and ordered some trade ships to the Danish markets.
THE KINGDOM OF WEST FRANCIA
Karl IV, Roi d' Leon
DIPLOMACY: Burgundy (a)
Karl constructed some bridges across the legions of streams and rivers around Paris, and attempted to increase the abilities of his government. After issuing these orders, he himself went off to visit theDuke of Burgundy, and aquired his alliance, partly because he married the Duke's eldest daughter.
THE KINGDOM OF EAST FRANCIA
Ludwig III
DIPLOMACY:Thuringia (a), Lorraine (a), Westphalia (fa)
Ludwig finally married the Lorraine Duke's daughter, sealing an alliance, after making alliances withseveral other regions around Franconia. He also initiated trade pacts with several other European Kings, including Karl and Guthrum.
THE DANISH KINGDOM
Guthrum, Rex Danmark
DIPLOMACY:Skane (a), Halland (ea), Smalland (c), Friesland (c), Saxony (ne), Holstien (fa)
Guthrum wisely invested in his government, after seeing so many regions eager to join his rapidly expanding kingdom. He too ordered more trade ships constructed and set to sea, for the greater glory (and wealth) of the Danish kingdom. While this was going on, he and his Sjaelland ally went off on a blitz-diplomacy tour.
THE LOMBARD KINGDOM OF ITALY
Berengar d' Frium, Rex Sognari
DIPLOMACY: Verona (ea), Romagna (fa, then c), Tuscany (ne), Savoy (c)
Berengar became a close friend of Leo VI, and built a few troops, which he loaned to the Byzantine emperor. He also stripped most of his trade routes of their protective war galleon escort, interdicted the trade route with Serbia, and handed those reins to Leo as well. Trusting his beaurocrats to handle the transfer of command, he went to Verona to get married. On the way back to Liguria, he and his wife honeymooned in Romagna and the Tuscan hills, where they worked on creating a Berengar junior. He was only mildly disappointed at being presented with a daughter, but continued with his kingly plans, and travelled to Savoy to get them to join the big, happy Lombard family.
THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PAPACY
Benedict IV, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, Successor to the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the Papal States, and Servant of the Servants of God, whew.
DIPLOMACY: Calabria (nt), Apulia (fa), Spoleto (fa), Romagna (c to Lombard Italy)
Il Papa doubled the size of his Papal army, and turned the whole thing over to the Occidental Roman Emperor, Leo. He instructed his troops to mind their Christian manners when fighting with their Orthodox brethren, hinting on big goings-on in the near future. He also accepted a string of titles a mile long, and invested in his Christian government, so he could have a hope of living up to a few of them. So as to have some cash to further his Catholic plans, he exacted the 5% tithe from the rest of the Roman Catholic nation of Europe. Finally, doing a little diplomacy of his own, he aquired a few allies, and convinced one of the Lombard king's allies to unswear his feudal oath to Berengar.
AL AGHRABID EMIRAT AS SIQILLI
Ibrahim, Emir as Siqilli, Fist of Allah
DIPLOMACY: none
Ibrahim turned over no instructions to his lackeys.
UMMAYAD CALIPHAT AL CORDOBA
Abdullah Nasir, Caliph al Cordoba, Infidel's Bane
DIPLOMACY: Granada (a)
Nasir went to Granada with his army to secure an alliance, and wanted to go on to Andalusia, but the Granadans were a reticent about joining the Caliphate, so it took Nasir a full 5 years to convince them. He also moved his trade dhips around a bit, and warily eyeballed the Moroccans on the other side of the Gibraltar Straight.

THE CALIPHATE AL MORAVID
Yahya III, the Faithful
DIPLOMACY: Algeria (ea)
Yahya tried to convince the Cordovans he didn't want their silly little Andalusian region by demobilizing a substantial chunk of his army, puting them to work digging irrigation ditches for his fig plantations. He also opened a trade route across the Gibraltar Staright. Giving the peaceful diplomat routine another go in Algeria, extolling his warrior abilities, he avoided insulting them long enough to establish an alliance of sorts. He was also hard at work making little Yahyas.
THE FATAMID EMPIRE
Said ibn Hussayn, Imam Ubaydullah al Mahdi
DIPLOMACY:Mansura (t), Sinai (nt), Levant (ne)
Said invested heavily in his own government, with both people and cash. He also shuffled some trade ships around, and went on a diplomatic mission to the east, to minor effect. On his return he got busy with the wife, and was overjoyed to have an heir and then another son. Meanwhile his Faiyum ally had gone north in search of expanding the Empire, and after limited success in Lebanon and Syria, he went to Jordan. It was here he ran into trouble with the local militia. Trying to offer marriage to the local commander's daughter, it apparently came out that he claimed to have already slept with her. This was not appreciated by the court, who thumped him, slapped him in irons, and tossed him in a cell underneath the local chieftain's fort. The execution date is being debated while the local priests determine the accuracy of his claims.
THE SONGHAI HERDSMEN
Kersil Mbi,
DIPLOMACY:Gorouol (ne), Kurfei (c), Garou (ne)
In an attempt to build on his meager budget, Mbi opened a few trade routes, both overland and by sea. His budget was spent trying to make his government bigger and better. Mbi also wanted some neighboring regions to swear fealty to him, but didn't spend enough time in any one place to make them see things his way.
THE HIDDEN KINGDOM OF THE KONGO
T'Dolo, King of the Dark
DIPLOMACY: Deke(ne)
The Hidden King in the Hidden Kingdom founded a Hidden University (the T'Dolo University) at Kinshasa, but made some paths to it so his own people could find heir way to enlightenment. He too opened some sea trade route with his closest neighboring nations.
KINGDOM OF NIGERIA
Nwaniko, Prince of Benin
DIPLOMACY: none
Nwaniko...was notably unleaderlike. Again.
THE KINGDOM OF TCHAD
Yes Vorta,
DIPLOMACY: Hausa (t)
The Songhai king with his 4,000 warriors had been gone from Gorouol when Yes Vorta showed up with almost 4 times that number of troops, and didn't bother to try being diplomatic. He crushed all resistance in the region, and the Gorouolis "Growlies" could only grumble under their yokes of their new oppressors..
THE KINGDOM OF OUAGADOU
Ibchuch, Supreme Ruler of the Ghana
DIPLOMACY:none
Ibchuch... was also remarkably nondirective. Again.
THE PAINTED WOLF TRIBES (ZIMBABWE)
Chanu Follak't, Bloodspear
DIPLOMACY:Matopos(ne), Banhine (c), Vaal (c), Mapugubwe(c)
Chanu renamed his nation after the former tribes of his two wives (the Painted tribe, and the Wolf tribe), both of whom have bore six kids already for Chanu. He also decided it was kind of pointless to have such a huge army, so he demobilized nearly all of it and had the homeland region made far more beautiful an dlivable than it ever was before. He too went into the field, briefly chatting with several neighboring regions.
THE NEW WORLD
MERC TROOPS 7MC, 5MI, 6MS, 4MW, 1MT
MERC AQRS C01 S01 I01 W01
MERC LEADERS Mountain Lion, MB26
Calliacatl was unresponsive to his advisors' queries for direction.
THE MAYAN ASTRONOMERS
Itzam Mo, Priest-King of the Yucatan
DIPLOMACY:Chontal (nt), Kekchi (ne), Achi (fa)
The Mayans opened trade with the Aztec Empire, and had their own merchants fish the Florida Straights for tuna and marlin. Itzam had little time for such sport, as he was busy making little priests and running the kingdom. His Yucatec ally was out having fun, though, in the jungles of Chontal, and further south. His Quiche ally was the lucky one of the three, since he got to do some of that sport fishing on his way to and from rounding up slaves from Colon, Arawak, and Taino.
QUIRO MAPUCHE
Shirokas, the Chosen
DIPLOMACY:none
Shirokas found a wife, got married, and had a lot of children.
THE ANDEAN INCAN EMPIRE
Cium, Running Rook
DIPLOMACY:Nazca (a)
Cium spent just about his whole wad transforming his homeland into a really livable place. Just about everybody now has a road within a few hundred yards of their front door. Leaving his troops to guard the place, he was gone to Nazca, while this transformation was taking shape. In the end, it was the right thing to do, since he got an ally out of the bargain.
ANASAZI
Hasaan wanted to spend a lot more money than he had, mostly because his accountants told him he had it. But before indebting himself to eternity, he found his clerks' errors and had a few of them strung out in the desert sun to dry for a few weeks. There was also some confusion on whether to appoint an heir, a regent for himself, both, or neither. He's determined to get this cluster figured out in the near future.
SONOMA EMPIRE
The brand new king wanted to outlaw slavery as much as Running Bear did, but try as hard as he could, he could not make the council accept such a proposal. So he proclaimed it to the masses just as Running Bear did, and hid in his secret cave, with a previously stashed cache of food and arrows, to fend off the assassins the council was almost sure to send looking.
The council was heard to to say, "Our fine caste society has worked for us for centuries! And how would we accomplished any work without our slaves? Only over our cold dead bodies will we accept such a notion!"
...to which the exploited lower class and huge slave poulation said, "Very well..., if you insist." And they rebelled. Vastly outnumbered, the police held off the masses at the police strongholds, but no one could have protected the council after having made such a bald statement. The council members were executed, one and all.
There being no council, no law enforcement, no (apparent) king, and no national army, Patwin, Pomo and Salinan all revolted. When White Hawk came out of hiding however, they decided he was a pretty smart guy (after all, he didn't get poisoned like Running Bear), and rejoined the now Sonoma Empire, as economic allies.
THE IROQOUIS NATION
The coucil of the Iriquois Nation ordered finances be allocated for new paths, some field irrigation channels, and for a new University, where the tribal elders would gather all the young warriors, and instruct them in the history of the world. While this was going on, Uphand Fox went out to Scioto and Michigama, but failed to any meaningful commitments from them.
