Lords of the Earth, Campaign XX, Turn 006, A.D. 930

TURN 5 ORDERS DUE BACK BY Friday, 18 October, 1159pm to eddief6@ix.netcom.com

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GM COMMENTS

PLEASE use the new (version 3) blank orders page. It makes things much easier on your overworked gm.

Lords 20 Rules addendum is on the web page. Check it out.

There is some discussion regarding livestock points, hunting, herding, etc... I will not be implementing any of these anytime soon in Lords XX. It's complicated enough for me already.

There is a Lords20 maillist at lords20-l@lists.pbmgames.com for general Lords 20 discussion topics and announcements. Email to it and put "subscribe {your email address}" in the body to get on it.

PROGRAM COMMENTS

The Intercity trade income isn't working for fa cities. If you have one or more of these, add them into your intercity trade income til I get this figured out. The tithe subroutine is working again. Everything else appears to be working normally. I am still using Stats3.1g. I have a copy of 3.1i, but the trade routes aren't showing up as they should. I'll stick to what I know works before switching to 3.1i.

The future of computerized gm'ing in Lords is called a relational database management system (RDMS). Sadly, the best one I've seen is MS Access, and it has the standard multi-hundreds of dollars MS pricetag. Way powerful, with the ability to input customized forms (builds, invests, and some actions, ...), which then updates all the data , and prints out customized reports (stats sheets). This is the fix for gm "burnout", cutting about 70% of the work out of running a turn.

MAP NOTES

Some Capitols are not on the maps, All Capitols listed on the players.txt file actually exist even if they're not on the map. I have upgraded my sytem to 16MB of RAM, so now I can view all those nice maps with the PaintShop Pro software in the Lords 20 website. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to write on them with that program (I think it might just be a viewer), meaning I'll need to get a .gif editor instead of just a viewer.

If you still need maps, and can't get usable product from the .gif files online (the best map producers have been PaintShop Pro and Pagemaker), send me a check (10$ buys you the world here) and your mapset will go out that day priority mail. USnail service says it takes 1 to 3 days.

Infantry (500 men = 1 point), Cavalry (500 men = 1 point), Siege Engineers (500 men = 1 point), Warships (5 ships = 1 point), Transports (5 ships = 1 point)

THE HONG KONG TRADERS
Xian Wu, King of Hong Kong
DIPLOMACY: Lingsi (a)
The king of the Hong Kong traders visited his allies in Lingsi, while sending one of his generals on a slaving mission to the west. Xiao Pao rounded up about 5000 slaves in Gouangxi and Nanchao, then ran into significant resistance in Korat. They managed to keep the slaves they had from escaping, but lost enough troops in skirmishes that they couldn't get any more. Rather than losing everything in the Laotian mountains, Xiou Pao returned straight to Annam. Xian's Taiwanese ally ventured into the Pacific in search of current to the land of the Okinawans, but no one heard from him or his ships again.

THE UNITED MONARCHY OF THE AVANS
Narathu Hsiapaw, The Celestial, Virtuous, and Benignant King Narathu Hsiapaw, Monarch of all Burmese People, Exarch of Arakan, Munificent Potentate of Pegu, Just Paragon to Thaton, Beloved Leader of Sagaing, and Dispenser of all Avan Goodness and Benevolence
DIPLOMACY: Padishan (c), Sagiang (fa)
The Avan armies were out slaving and looking out for possible Champa aggression. What they saw from the south was enough to make them cringe (for about, oh, 2 or 3 seconds) before starting a full retreat to the capitol. Without a prayer of beating them (they were outnumbered about 15 to 1), they bolted for Pagan. They hoped and prayed for the Champans to pass their poor "No, really, we're very poor!" city. And they did.

THE JAVAN FEDERATION
Koer Singh, President Sirivjavan
DIPLOMACY:Luzon (a), Mon (f)
Koer Singh was also reelected for another term, and watched with obvious joy as the capitol city was expanded again. Diplomats were abroad, as far away as south China, and the university continued to be strongly funded.

THE EMPIRE OF CHAMPA
Palpatyn, Emperor Viet
DIPLOMACY: Diplomacy?! Get real...
The Khemr king put his whole, highly touted army under the command of his most capable general and said, "Gooooooo get 'im!" So, off went general Darkon, trailing some 100,000 nationals and mercenaries. As they crossed the Avan ricefields in Pegu, Darkon's second-in-command, Chitor, suffered a massive heart attack and was buried in that foreign field. Passing the Burmese caritol entirely, Darkon took his army up the Thai coast to the prize of India, Palas. There they met the Palas king and heir and what troops they could muster. The Champan army sieged the capitol after rapidly taking control of the surrounding countryside, and after wiping out the defenders, pillaged the city and looted the region.
As they were enjoying themselves at the expense of the Palas natives, Palpatyn's second son Darh showed up to wet his whistle with some Indian maidens, and make sure Darkon didn't let the power trip go to his head. Which, by the way, it had. It became clear to Darh that general Darkon, who had effectively all of the Champan army, and over 15 years worth of taxes in his plunder train, had big designs on the Viet Imperial throne. Passing general Chitor's gravesite in Pegu, the army stopped to pay its respects to their honored dead, and that night Darh had general Darkon murdered by poison. Prince Darh returned to Khemer almost a year later the triumphant hero, but sick of the pressures of command, he turned everything over to his old dad, and happily got back to his drinking and womanizing.

THE MAAORI SEAHOLD
Palaau Halmahera, Son of Sea and Sky
DIPLOMACY: Moluccas (ne)

EMPIRE OF THE LOWER GANGES
Narayanapala II, Keeneh, His Imperial Majesty, Guardian of the Ganges
DIPLOMACY: Bhutan (nt), Kalinga (a)
Figuring to forestall any funny ideas from the Khmer royals, Narayanapala sent his heir south into Avan lands to assist in looking out for the Champans. As his group descended from the Arakan Mountains, they saw the Imperial Champan army (and a LOT of fleeing refugees) crossing the fields of Pegu. What they didn't see was the Burmese army, which had hightailed it back ot their homeland. This seemed a very wise thing to do at the time, so Prince Mehrtarsarad called the full rertreat and sent messengers to his father in Assam.
Diplomatic discussions there came to an abrupt halt as Narayanapala met his son at Palas to prepare for the inevitable from the oncoming throng. Both father and son stood in the defense of the capitol, but Narayanapala sent his second son into hiding with his sister in Nadavaria. The defense forces of the Ganges Empire were demolished in the second rush on the city, obliterated by overwhelming numbers. Palas was sacked, but thankfully not burned, and the homeland looted for all the plunder the Champan army could carry away. And as quickly as they came, the marauding gang marched away to the south again.
Naryanapala II returned to see the destruction firsthand, and begin the rebuild. He arranged to marry the Avan princess Nareen, and brought her back to Palas after a very brief ceremony. His hatred for Palpatyn and the Champans grew with each passing day as he prayed for vengeance and guidance from Shiva...

THE INDUS VALLEY KINGDOM
Mahendrapala, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus
DIPLOMACY: Sukkur (a), Surashtra (ea), Carmania (nt), Ghazni (t), Sahis (ne)
The Mansurashah deemed it wise to build on his influence in the nearby regions, and sent his diplomats to proclaim the well-being of those with the closest ties to the kingdom. The responses were less than splendid, with the Carmanians being the most put off, by one diplomat named Mehmet.

THE RAJPUT KINGDOM OF INDIA
Krisnaraja II, Lord of the River, Life-Giver
DIPLOMACY: Vatsa (t)
The Life-Giver proclaimed his son and namesake as his heir, officially. His off-color son, Krisnaraja III, proved to a moderately ineffective leader of men, due mostly to poor health. The king also married off his daughter Benh, to the leaders of Vatsa.

THE CHOLA MANDALAM
Aditya, Mandala Chola
DIPLOMACY: none
Aditya invested heavily in his government again, hopig to create a stable and effective basis for his nation's govt after his passing away. At 57 years old, he figured he wouldn't be around too much longer.

IMAM MUSLIM
Taffakore Vaght, Siadat Kuran
DIPLOMACY: none
The Islamic primacy is still open for a player. Ben Vincent has next shot at this new nation.

THE ABBASID CALIPHATE
Ali, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
DIPLOMACY: Mosul (a), Abadan (a), Ahvaz (ea), Aleppo (fa), Carhae (fa)
The Kaliph dissipated his funds on the expansion of cities Bagdad, Kraznovia, and Raja. While all this stone pushing and pulling was going on, Ali and his leaders were in the field acquiring a fistful of allies, including the Emir of Antioch. The Kaliph's influence now stretches from the Gulf of Persia to the Med.

THE MAHMUD GHAZNI PERSIAN KINGDOM
Qara Bachkam, Kophatshah
DIPLOMACY:Khurasan (c)
Qara hired more horsemen, and spent some time on the field rading Transoxania, before returning to try and have a son with Mrs. Shah. They did, after four daughters, and there was much rejoicing.

PRINCIPATE OF KIEV RUS
Sibirsk, Knyaz Kiev
DIPLOMACY: none
The Kiev Prince Sibirsk kept his nose to the ground and ears to the grindstone... or something like that. Poles were eyed to the north, and defenses were made ready, just in case.

THE POLISH KINGDOM
Piast I, Palota Polski
DIPLOMACY:Bochnia (f), Meissen (f), Lausatia (a), Little Poland (ne)
Piast had his artisans draw up plans for a new city, antd Piast himself broke the ground for the walls of Wroclaw, in Poland. Piast returned to the capitol to rule his rapidly growing kingdom, while his armies were in the far eastern fringe of Europe, shackling some healthy slaves.

THE NOVGOROD KINGDOM
Vasili Borislov
DIPLOMACY:Veposkava (a), Kalinin (fa), Livonia (f), Rzhev (fa), Smolensk (fa), Kirivirch (t)
Boris hired some footmen to ensure a state of defense readiness in the fledgeling kingdom, and picked some slaves out for himself from Yaroslav. A novel concept for the Russians, but the only people who really hated the idea were the slaves themselves, and they're not really "whole" humans. Not to the rest of the Russians, anyways. Keeping tabs on the new army was about too much for Boris, and he died, to be replaces by his son Vasili.
Vasili had married his paramour from Livonia, and brought her to Novgorod to have some little guys of their own. His diplomats were in the lands between Novgorod and Kiev Rus, and there they found some leaders extremeley eager for an alliance to stand united against the slavers from Poland.

THE BYZANTINE ROMAN EMPIRE
Leo VI, the Wise, Roman Emperor of the East, "Hammer of the Serbs"
DIPLOMACY: Bithnia (a), Lydia (a), Macedon (t)
Leo and the Lydian king Michael both were in Bithnia, trying to get the Bithnian king to cede his powers to the Emperor, but without effect. The forces in Macedon were pulled back to Constantinople, and a new leader was sent to negotiate with the newly independent Greeks. They agreed to send tribute to Leo, in return for protection and self rule. Well, mostly for the self rule.

THE SAXON KINGDOM OF SUSSEX
Edward I, Saxon King of England
DIPLOMACY: Anglia (f), Lothian (fa)
London grew, and Edward spent a few years in Anglia, where he achieved their acceptance. One of the first duties the Duke of Anglia performed for his new king was to convince the Scots to join his new liege.

THE REPUBLIC OF WEST FRANCIA
Lewis, President d' Allianc Francois
DIPLOMACY: Vermandois (f), Navernais (a), Provence (t), Orleans (f), Flanders (f), Brabant (f), Languedoc (f)
President Lewis was chosen by a general election to remain in office for another term, and several of the republic's allies joined formally into the state. Expected assistance for government from the Papacy never materialized.

THE KINGDOM OF GERMANIA
Ludwig III, Rex Germanicus
DIPLOMACY: Moravia (fa), Slovakia (c), Austria (ea)
Ludwig ordered massive imprrovements throughout the kingdom from his seat in Franconia. His heir Wilhelm was about, claiming the remaining territories of central Europe in the name of the king of the Germans. The remaining generals watched the movements of their neighbors' armies.

THE DANISH KINGDOM
Guthrum, Rex Danmark
DIPLOMACY: Holland (f)
Guthrum also ordered improvements in his wide and diverse kingdom, while also overseeing the construction of many new transport ships for new trade overseas. Charts they had, destinations they didn't. So they stayed in Gormavn. The heir Truan Hawkcall, "Das Forschungreisender", picked up his little brother Trom "Holzarbeiter", and went sailing to test their mettle against the violent seas. Their return was marked with celebrations lasting a full week in Gormavn. Trom was wed to the daughter of the Earl of Holland, which was uncharacteristically responsive to the Danish negotiators. Guthrum and Ludwig signed trade agreements.

THE LOMBARD KINGDOM OF ITALY
Giovanni d' Orsini, Rex Sognari
DIPLOMACY: Carinthi (c), Tuscany (nt)
The "mambo" king, Giovanni sent his admiral Sforza off with the Lomabard allies to whale on the Siqillians. Sailing to the boot of Italy with both his own ships and some of the mercenary variety, he met the Romagna and Savoy dukes, who had to trudge the whole way down there on foot. They stopped on the way in Rome to get some Papal support. The Pope's troops remembered what happened in Ochirida when last they fought for the Sognari king, and refused to go without direct orders from Pope John X, who issued no such decree.
After short work securing the ferry to Sicily, the Italians went to work pacifying the Siqillian homeland. Amar Layth gathered his own forces on the other side of the island, and prepared for the (hopefully not) inevitable siege at Palermo. It came about 4 months after the initial ferry crossings at Messina. Without an heir, the Aghrabid Emir died in battle against the infidel, according to the will of Allah. The christian army immediately set about converting the locals to Catholicism, at the pointy end of a sword. The ensuing revolt whittled away a fair chunk of the Romagna and Savoian armies, but in the end all the mosques were torn down. Admiral Sforza tried to turn over the regional governorship to the Napoli king Ricardo, who had no stated intention of taking it, or nearly enough troops to hold it.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PAPACY
John X, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, Successor to the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the Papal States, and Servant of the Servants of God, whew.
DIPLOMACY:none
Pope John X had abbies set up in Lomabrdy, Liguria, and Bavaria, and a monastery in Tuscany. The pagans in Slovenia accepted the word of Christ from the aptly named bishop Christopher. While the methods were a little blunt (or very sharp, depending on which end you happened to be standing at), Pope John couldn't help but like the newfound piety of the Sicillians.

THE NAPOLI KINGDOM
Ricardo, Rex Napoli
DIPLOMACY: none
Without an effective defense force, Ricardo had to sit back and watch the Lombards saunter through his kingdom on their way to lambast the Sicillians.

AL AGHRABID EMIRAT AS SIQILLI (Dead)
Amar Layth, Emir as Siqilli, Fist of Allah
DIPLOMACY: none
After some previous jabs by the Lombards, the "Fist of Allah" got the snot kicked out of him.

UMMAYAD CALIPHAT AL CORDOBA
Abdullah Nasir, Caliph al Cordoba, Infidel's Bane
DIPLOMACY: Talavera (ea), Salamanca (t), Aragon (ea), Portugal (ea), New Castille (a)
Abdullah shuffled his merchant marine a bit, while ruling his growing domain. His heir and leaders were out increasing his influence, and Asad (his son and heir) took a wife from the New Catille region of the Iberian peninsula. Abdullah appeared to be content with only fourteen kids, much to his wife's happiness.

THE CALIPHATE AL MORAVID
Yahya III, the Faithful
DIPLOMACY: Tunisia (ne), Algeria (ne), Zirid (ne), Cheliff (ne), Merrakesh (nt)
Yayha's attempts at diplomacy were, overall, without effect. He showed his poor diplomatic skills again. The Caliph's heir Mulay was very nearly as ineffective.

THE FATAMID EMPIRE
Farouk Hussayn, Imam Ubaydullah al Mahdi
DIPLOMACY: Faiyum (ne), Lebanon (t), Levant (ea), Syria (ea), Petra (fa)
Farouk fancied a woman he saw in Faiyum, and took her for his second wife, as his leaders did a little tandem diplomacy on the lands east of Egypt. More trade ships were built and sent to other Mediterranean nations.

THE SONGHAI HERDSMEN
Minkah Kersil
DIPLOMACY: Galam (nt), Adrar (c), Garou (ea),
The chief herdsman remained in the homeland to rule his rapidly expanding demesne and further his genes with the little missus. Trade with the Moroccans was desired, but Minkah's land doesn't stretch quite that far (yet).

THE HIDDEN KINGDOM OF THE KONGO
T'Dolo, King of the Dark
DIPLOMACY: Vili (ne), Lui (h), Matadi (un)
A new port city was constructed in far off Mbundu, and T'Dolo governed back in Kongo. His diplomats were out spreading the word on how great the HKK was, but as diplomats go, they were really lousy at it. Lui and Matadi actually degraded in status. The HKK king resolved not to send them out in his name again.

KINGDOM OF NIGERIA
N'wanko, King of Benin
DIPLOMACY: none
The Nigerians meandered aimlessly.

THE KINGDOM OF TCHAD
Tunka Vorta, Omar Kanembu
DIPLOMACY: Zerma (a), Nupe (a)
Tunka settled into the kingly life and reigned the Kanembu nation. His chief diplomat and his general Biobaku went to Zerma and Nupe to get the young king a pair of allies.

THE PAINTED WOLF TRIBES (ZIMBABWE)
Chanu Follak't, Bloodspear
DIPLOMACY: Shona (ea), Goronga (fa), Transkei (f), Banhine (a), Kaanga (a), Nguni (a)
Bloodspear's reign stretched the coast of Afriqa from the cape nearly to Ethiopia. Unfortunately his suzerainty's size wasn't matched by his government's ability to keep track of thing's like, oh, like taxes.

DIPLOMACY: none
There was a vast meteor shower in 926 AD and the astronomers watched and contemplated its significance for a few years. Little else was accomplished.

QUIRO MAPUCHE
Mali, the Chosen
DIPLOMACY: none
Mail had a city founded in Poya and gave it his father's name, Bariloc. He sent his vizier on vacation in the new city, and had him supervise the new university there. Nothing official or anything, just something to keep him from being bored after nearly 10 years of vacationing...

The Andean empire did nothing. No really, they didn't do one single thing in five whole years.

ANASAZI
Hasaan Running Lizard, The Ancient Enemy
DIPLOMACY:Tiwa (ne), Hohokam (f)
Hasaan and one of his lieutenants tried to convince the Tiwa tribe to commit to the Anasazi, without noticable effect, while Hasaan's heir Morning Star had better luck with the chief of the Hohokam. Hassan was elected to another term of the federation.

THESONOMA KINGDOM

DIPLOMACY:Salinan (t)
A new port city was established in Salinan, by the name of Ursa Majoris, and Tharsis in Pomo was expanded. White Shark died in a whaling expedition ealrly in 926 and his closest friend Rafael accepted the regency of the kingdom on behalf of White Shark's son Running Deer.
