Lords of the Earth, Campaign Four, Turn 29

TURN 30 ORDERS DUE BACK BY: FRIDAY, APRIL 7TH, 1995.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ai-yi-yi... I apologize for the extreme lateness of this turn, but severe overtime at work, as well as a combined triple-illness took me out of the picture for over a month. And then I had to redo Sean's mapset so that I would know what was going on! This does mean that updated maps are now available for the fees noted below. I have made some changes to them (even from Sean's changes to the base maps) so you might consider ordering a new set. For one thing, I put the region names in Anatolia back to what they were - it was confusing me, as well as the players in the area.

I sent out the rulebooks that you ordered when I recieved your turn, so you should have gotten them weeks ago! If you did not, please let me know!

Please read the sections on Trade and Merchant Shipping in the rulebook carefully; what is allowed now is more restricted than it was before. Also remember that there is a limit to the number of MSP that can be based at a port city = 20 × City GPv.

We had to reenter all of the stat sheets by hand, so please check your regional and city Public Works to see that it is correct, as well as your regional garrisons.

Any changes required by the new limits on Government, QR's and so on will be implemented during Turn 30. You will not lose the extra points, instead they will be moved to other ratings that are below the maximum.

Anyway, here's the turn...

THINGS I NEED FROM YOU!

Particularly with the change in the Trade System, there is some fairly crucial information that I need from you. Please provide me with the following information with your next turn:

CREDIT NOTES

Sean has not been able to transfer the back credit you all had to me yet, so I'm carrying the cost of this campaign out of my pocket. Needless to say, I'm not flush with cash, so anyone that goes delinquent on their account will be ejected immediately from the game. I will not be able to carry ANYONE. Be warned! It is YOUR responsibility to keep your account positive.

YOUR ORDERS

I see from looking at the previous sets of orders turned in that many of you are VERY lax about turning the orders in with the proper format. I provide you with a nice order form each turn, so use it! If you're doing them on computer - that's cool - but you must give me all of the information requested on the regular order form, and it helps if it is in the same order. ALWAYS include your name, your Countries Name and your address.

MAP NOTES

I don't remember all of the changes I made to the maps, but as I think of them, I'll tell you:

The city of Akita in Akita province was renamed to Aomori.

The city of Ust Belaja in Kur province is renamed Kwangdu.

The city of Turkmen in Turkmen province is renamed Torkmen.

The city of Vladimir in Polotsk is renamed Vlatim.

The province of Otrar next to Kara-Khitai is renamed Otrarsh.

The province of Kur in Manchuria is renamed East Kur.

CONVERTING MONASTARIES

Sean and I use different Monastary (Religious Site) systems. If you have monastaries, please read section [8.6] of the 5th Edition Rulebook. You are now required to convert your "raw" monastary points into Religious Control Statuses, as per the following table.

New Control Cost in "Raw"
Status Monastaries

Abbey (ab) 1

Monastary (mn) 2

Cathedral (ca) 4

Holy City (hs) 10

Note, however, that ONLY RELIGIOUS PRIMACIES can have these kinds of control statuses. If your nation is NOT a Religious Primacy, you must convert your "raw" monastary points into Public Works at a rate of 2 Monastaries to 1 PWB.

RULES ERRATA AND REMINDERS

Credit: Remember that if your Credit is shown in parentheses, like this ($2.00), it means that you owe me that amount of money! Pay up, ya deadbeats!

Public Works Support: You all do pay support on existing public works, which is why some of you with no Megalithic Constructs have a very small Support cost.

Children: Now that I'm keeping track of them, you need to worry about having them! If there is no Children & Heirs section on your stat sheet, you don't have any! So get busy.

Maximum Ratings: The numbers in brackets ( [ x ] ) following the various ratings on your stat sheets are your current maximum levels for those ratings. You may invest in a rating that is at maximum, though it will not do any good until the maximum increases.

Building Public Works: Remember that PWB must be built in a location and you have to tell me where! If not, I will stick it in your homeland / capital.

Trade Route FreeCap: This is the "Free Capacity" of the Route in question. This number, if positive, is the extra number of effective MSP that can be allocated to this route to make money. If the figure is negative, then that indicates that there are too many merchants on the route and the extras are not making any money.

Outposts and Trade Ranges: Sorry, there are no Outpost cities or regions under the 5th Edition rules, and your base trade range is three (3). So, many of your current trade routes will have to be closed down or rearranged. Also note the maximum MSP limits per port!

[2.14.9] The Garrison (change)

Paragraph two, sentence two should read: "The number of units required for a successful garrison is equal to the city Gpv." This matches the requirement as expressed in [2.14.14].

[5.4.5] Demobilizing Units (addition)

Add after bulletted list, new paragraph: "When units are demobilized, they produce 1 NFP, regardless of how many NFP were used to construct them originally. One exception to this is the demobilization of Ferry Points, which is not allowed."

[5.6.5] Maximum City Wall Points (New)

The maximum number of total wall points (wp) that can be built on a city is limited to the Siege QR of the nation constructing the wall points. If a nation captures a city with more wall points than they could build for it, then they can keep the extra points, but if those points are destroyed by siege or assault, they cannot be rebuilt.

Example: The Romans fortify the city of Constantinople to their maximum (Siege Qr = 10, so 10 wall points). After many horrible events, the city is lost to the Pechnegs, who have Siege Qr of 4. Constantinople having been taken by treachery, it retains the 10 wall points. Later, the Arabs besiege the city and destroy three wall points, bringing it down to 7 wall points total. Since 7 is greater than 4 (the Pechneg Siege Qr), they cannot rebuild the lost wall points.

[6.1.5] Lieutenants (Addition)

A Lieutenant can also be dismissed, in effect, by granting them a province (Pacified or Friendly) of their own. In this case the Lieutenant and the granted province become a Feudal Ally of the nation. Note that the Lieutenant must be replaced by a Prince in this event. Which means, of course, that you must have a Prince hanging around to promote into the Lieutenant's slot.

I listen to a lot of music while doing Lords results; here's what was in the shuffle play while I was transcribing this turn:

BEI SONG

Xien Chou - Retainer of the Royal Seal, Explorer of the Northern Lands

DIPLOMACY: Higgan (annoyed)

The Bei Song continued to battle the eternal vastness of the northern forests - a town, Rongjiang, was carved from the wilderness in the region of Sungari, facing Kur on the Middle Amur. So too were some outdoor privies built in Kwangdu (formerly Ust Belaja) by the town council to "promote public cleanliness". Various ships used in the trade along the black waters of the Amur were sent to Rongjiang to find harborage. Captain Evergreen, sent to negotiate with the Higgan tribes, insulted their chiefs and the Lightning Spirit. He did not return from that land and the natives there are now restless. Xien Chou also commanded that a stable of sables be gathered and bred, for he found them pleasing to the eye.

THE GOBI HORDE

Gehankis -- Khan of the Pickle-Men

DIPLOMACY: Lang Shan / Gaxun Nür / Lob Nor(a)

Gehankis and his vast horde of men, horses, camels and oxen moved south again - it was cold in Mongol lands - and wound up in the inhospitable wastes of Gobi. "Ah! This is much better," proclaimed the Pickle-Khan. His men labored throughout the year to build a great fortress of stones and mud at a secret oasis within the desert. So too did the men under the command of Furlkin, Gehankis' son. Rumors abounded amongst the subject troops that these edifices would "give victory to the picklemen over the Chinese" and gain all much loot.

Tuhnwhap, however, did not play with the pretty rocks - he rode south and west into the lands of the Lang Shan. Now, a goodly number of years of sufficent rain, as well as the tribute of the Chinese, had swollen the ranks of the Lang Shan and their subject tribes (Gaxun Nür and Lob Nor). The LangShan princes were not pleased to play host to the 58,000 Tuhn warriors, but neither were they brave enough to deny Tuhnwhap (who was rather fierce) and at last they agreed to pay fealty to the Pickle-Men.

Thunwhap continued on then, into the lands of the Bulingir (who in turn had taken salt with the Tanguts), dragging the LangShan along with them. Again, Tuhnwhap faced hostile tribes but again he overawed them and his personal ferocity gained him respect. The Tanguts, however, were not willing to bend their necks to Gehankis and made a surprise attack on the Gobi army, hoping to scatter it and chop it to bits at their leisure. The Tangut attack was betrayed in turn, however, and Thunwhap smashed their forces utterly at Aratürük in May of 1247. The women and children and herds of the Tangut were divvied up amongst Tuhnwhap's men and those of the Lang Shan. It was a great victory.

KOREA

King Matsushita Balony - Prince of Sillia, Protector of Civilized China

DIPLOMACY: No Effect

The Koreans breathed a giant sigh of relief that the Gobi had not turned in their direction (yet). Matsushita, also eager to improve the lot of his nation in this time of crisis, ordered that his scribes assemble a list of all men of warrior age and their holdings in the land. This was done, though the scribes noted with disdain that the Chin were also conducting such a census. Many more scholars flocked to the university as well - this was a good time to enter a government service that did not involve horses, swords and fighting the endless numbers of the Gobi!

General Po'rk nosed about in Ordos and Wu Hai, annoying the Chin border guards (who were a little on edge) before returning to Yun to report that the Gobi had not crossed the Yellow River along that section of the frontier.

THE EMPIRE OF NIPPON

Oni Usage - Shogun of Nippon

DIPLOMACY: None

The Japanese continued to settle Sakhalin, with some thousands more peasants transplanted to that cold and forbidding wilderness by the Imperial government. Their hands were cold as they put axe to the ancient forests. "How do the Bei Song stand this?" they wondered as they huddled in their tiny huts during the endless night.

CHIN CHINA

Y'Ling Huan-ti - Emperor of the Middle Kingdom, Master of the World

DIPLOMACY: Tangchou(f), Szechwan(f), Hwai(f), Hunan(f)

Y'Ling, turning his attention from the debate in the Imperial Court between the propronents of the "Male Light - Female Light" philosophy and their philosophical enemies, ordered that all of the subject kings of the realm pay homage to him and join him in the capital at Daw Hni. His powers of persuasion were proved formidable indeed as he convinced many of those noble lords to pledge their lands to his direct administration and rule. His other minions gathered thousands of troops to his banner at Daw Hni as well, for there were black clouds on the northern horizon and all matter of deviltry was preparing to break loose.

A Korean spy was chased out of Wu Hai by the garrison there.

THE SOUTHERN CATHAY DYNASTY

Qiou Dou - Prince of the Rising Southern Star

DIPLOMACY: No Effect

Eager to improve their lot, the Cathay build a capital city, Zhanjing, in Lingnan and hoped that soon many merchants would come to their port and bring gold! Well, maybe... The Cathay were glad that the other Chinese empires were between them and the Gobi.

THE GREATER EMPIRE OF KHMER

Jayavarmann - His Most Serene Highness, Cloak of Buddha, Mask of Hidden Glory, Greatgrandson of Bodhisattva

DIPLOMACY: None

The Khemer grew grossly fat and rich, feeling so content with the state of things that the revolt of the Shan mountain tribes went unnoticed by either the central government or the accountants in Angkor (which was pretty amazing!).

ISLAND KINGDOM OF JAVA

Palmsarasayan XVIII - King of the Spice Isles, Master of the Spice Trade

Diplomacy: None

The Javans contemplated the Temple of Ultimate Reality so much that they forgot to undertake any more mundane matters.

POLYNESIA - THE BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL

THE KINGDOM OF TIBET

Fu Ming - The Holy Llama - High Priest of the Buddhist Faith

DIPLOMACY: None

The Tibetians became embroiled in a theological argument amongst themselves and ignored everything (and everyone) else.

THE CHOLA MANDELA EMPIRE

Somatha - The Left Hands of Vishnu

DIPLOMACY: Gangas(fa), Sri Lanka(f), Surashtra(f)

"Thousands of pieces of gold, hundreds of NFP!" chortled Somatha and then bent his will to disposing of the immense wealth of this mighty empire. A strong new army was raised for General Koras - the world was a dangerous place, even for the mighty Chola. The cities of Tanjore, Kollam, Polonarva, Madras, Manyakheta, Bandar and Bhadrachsan were all expanded a level and massive works were undertaken throughout the empire to improve the roads, irrigation canals, granaries, public markets, parks, shrines, temples and the buildings of the government.

THE KINGDOM OF SIRINIGAR

Akbar Singh - Khan of the Kush

DIPLOMACY: Chitor(f)

Jain priests travelled about the province of Und and the strength of their belief was such that many thousands of the populace of that fertile region became converts to the Jain faith. Akbar Singh was quite pleased by this. The Chitorese were honored to province the young Akbar Singh with a blushing bride with hennaed hair and dark red lips. he too was pleased to see her beauty and grace. The Ajmer allowed at least Sirinigari messengers to pass through their lands.

OTRAR CLANSMEN

Mishra - Khan of the Otrar Folk

DIPLOMACY: None

The Otrar, pressured both by the lack of new graze for their herds as well as the increasing strength of the Khirgiz to the west, moved at last and slammed south into Scythian lands. The Scythians, far weaker than the Otrar, were forced out to the south, into Turkman and the Otrar were pleased at the new expanse of grazelands that they had acquired.

SCYTHIA

The Scythians, now pushed by the Otrar clans from the north, raised their lances in salute of the Twins and crossed the Jaxartes into Kyzl-Kum. From there, they rode south into Turkmen with bright banners and a shining sea of lance tips. Now, there would be battle...

THE EMIRATE OF TURKMAN

Gin-al-Nur - Shah of Bukhara, Emir of Merv, Sultan of the Silk Route

DIPLOMACY: Tadzik(ea)

Gin-al-Nur's border scouts came to him with not-unexpected news - the Scythians had been forced into his lands and now marched south from Kyzl-Kum through the fertile fields of Turkmen itself. The Shah, determined to prevent the devastation of his lands, immediately led the Royal army out of Torkmen to intercept them. Aided by his scouts, the Shah soon stared down from a rise upon the spreading camps and kraals of the Scythians. "There are only some 18,000 warriors," his captain of scouts reported. The Shah's generals looked expectantly towards him, eager for the command to attack - for the numbers of the Turkmen were some 36,000 knights and soldiers. "No," said Gin-al-Nur, "first we will seek to turn the blade to our use, 'ere we break it." And so he rode down from the dusty hills to treat with the Twins.

After long discussions, the arrangement of marriage between two of Gin-al-Nur's neices and the Twins. and the provision of large sums of gold, the Scythians agreed to take service with the Turks and to move into the far southern lands to settle. Thus, escorted by a large force of Turks, the Scythians ended their immediate travels in Registan, which they recieved as their own, as well as the provinces of Sistan and Siahan.

SHAHDOM OF NIRIZIM

Mohammad Rashid - The Highest Follower of Allah

DIPLOMACY: Shirvan(a)

Considerable efforts continued to be expended to improve the lot of the Shahdom. Should not the earthly realm of Allah reflect the glory of his paradise? And so good works were pursued. The Imam shook his head in amazement at the fabrications of the beleaguered Byzantines. "The infidels are weak of mind due to their separation from the mind of God and they are prey to all sorts of fancies and myths" he opined.

SAFAVIYYAH DYNASTY OF BAGHDAD

Akbar Ibin Cedid Ayatollah Shayzar - Spokesman of God, Chosen of Allah, Guide of the Faithful, Shah of Baghdad, Most Learned of the Holy

DIPLOMACY: None

A sizable pack train of camels and mules was dispatched to the lands controlled by the al'Riyadh to bring the "Sword of Allah" gold, weapons and supplies. Akbar considered it quite a good investment, given the extent of the trouble that they had already caused for the infidels. Akbar also journeyed into the west to retrieve the large force of Safavid heavy infantry that had accompanied the al'Riyadh against the Byzantine domains. He met up with those doughty soldiers in Phrygia and found to his disgust that the al'Riyadh had gathered up all of their people from the provinces of Galatia, Psidia, Phyrgia, Pamphyla, Isauria and Cilicia - resulting in the timid reversion of those provinces back to the ways of the Greek-speaking Eastern Orthodox majorities therein. Nevertheless, he garrisoned Phyrgia, Pamphyla, Isauria and Cilicia heavily before returning to Baghdad - the Greatest City in the World!

Back in that glorious city, Umm Akbar (the son of the Ayatollah) arranged the marriage of his two daughters to the general Al-Shamzar, anointing that mighty warrior his heir in turn. The wedding ceremonies were extravagant and well attended by the rich and famous within the realm. A large force of well-armed Egyptians bothered the customs officials in Antioch for a time, seeking "the slaves!" but eventually they returned to the south in something of a snit.

AL'RIADYH HORDE

Quo-Far - Khan of the Shi'ite Nomads

DIPLOMACY: No Effect

Quo Far looked upon the lands that he had taken and found them almost as dry and inhospitable as the lands of the youth, back in the far south. He mused as to the destiny of his people as he counted the wagonloads of grain, weapons and gold that came to him in tribute from the Safavids and the Kazars. At last he turned to his advisors and spoke; "I have heard that there are lands beyond the Sea of Darkness that are rich and green and lush with game and fowl. I have heard that the inhabitants of those lands are fierce warriors, not weak like these thin-blooded Greeks, and they may test us and our martial ability. I say that we seek out these lands and make them our own." He advisors nodded in agreement, for there was little honor to be found in the dry uplands of Anatolia.

Thus did the al'Riyadh gather up all their people and, after a fierce raid into Bythnia and Paphlagonia to keep the Greeks off of their backs, marched north along the Pontine coast into Abasigia, where they regrouped and wintered before beginning the next stage of their great journey.

JABAL SHAMMAR TRIBE

The Jabal Shammar, finding no new lands to conquer and no way past the Safavids and the Egyptians, returned south to the northern Arabian plains to live as their fathers and grandfathers had done for long centuries. Still, they had some new stories to tell.

THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE OF THE EAST

Constantine von Hapsburg - Emperor of Constaninople, Protector of the Patriarch of Constaninople and Jerusalem, Roman Emperor of the East

DIPLOMACY: Ialomita(ea), Wallachia(ea)

The al'Riyadh continued to plague the Empire, their raiders wreaking great havoc in the provinces of Bythnia and Paphlagonia before they withdrew to the east. There was little peace within the Empire either, for war continued against the Cylosians in the west. While the admiral, Philip Arginus, took the fleet to blockade Corinth, the General John Tzimices took the army south through Attica to secure the province of Morea. Corinth itself, defended by the Cylosian general Pistaipano, held out for several months before the citizens of the town rose up and murdered the Cylosian garrison and threw open the gates. Benito Augusta was murdered only weeks later on Corfu and his empire dissolved with his passing.

Prince Jason, relaxing at last with the news of the destruction of Cylos and the reconquest of Greece, was woken by the captain of the Rus Guard and made haste across the city to the secret chambers under the baths of Vespasian to view with increasing horror the transcripts of a lengthly interrogation session that the Office of Hermes had recently conducted with the unwilling cooperation of an arab merchant, one Malouf al-Amin.

This fellow, apparently a high-ranking noble in the service of the Shahdom of Nirizim, had recently come into the City to join some of his companions who were in deep consultations with the various factions within the Patriarchy of the Eastern Church. Jason was sick with rage to learn the extent to which the tendrils of the Moslem monster had crept into the heart of the Empire. "Cleanse them with fire" he ordered, and the Hermetic order was swift to the grisly task. Raids were made throughout the city and in Thessaloniki, netting much Moslem gold and more records of the extent of both the depravity of the turncoats and the extent of their treachery.

Jason sent the traitors either into exile on the island of Samos or had those who had become apostate executed and their names stricken from the rolls of the Church. His own men replaced them and he ground the patriarchy firmly under his thumb.

In the north, Constantine made good progress amongst the White Russians, acquiring brides both for himself and for Jason and turning the thoughts of the lords of Ialomita and Wallachia eastward to the City. Indeed, after some politicking, the wives of Constantine and Jason convinced the priests of the White Russ to accept the eastern rite rather than the rite of Rome. Constantine then proved his mettle by converting the Banat (who angered him) to the Eastern rite as well. Another Byzantine general, Marcus Scaurus (an expatriate Italian, oddly enough) completed the reconquest of the north with the pacification of the Moldavians.

EASTERN EUROPE
MERCENARY POOL: 20I, 20C, 5W
MERCENARY AQRS: C4 I4 S3 W3

THE OSTMARK

The Reichwarden of the East, Protector of Civilized Europe

DIPLOMACY: None

The Holy Roman Empire, feeling the pangs of its size, split off the provinces of Tyol, Austria, Carinthia, Croatia and Bakony to form the Ostmark - a new state to shield the eastern flank of the Empire.

THE EMPIRE OF CYLOS

The provinces of Epirus and Serbia, all that remained of Cylos after the fall of Corinth and the death of Benito on Corfu, became independent.

KINGDOM OF THE KAZARS

Jacob II of Sarkel - Patriarch of Judah

DIPLOMACY: Bolgar(a), Alan(fa)

The Kazars purchased a large number of slaves from the al'Riyadh who were now perched on their southern border like a great flock of vultures. The Kazar priests then went amongst the slaves and converted them to Judaism in exchange for their freedom and new lands in the far north, indeed the province of Kirov was settled to (1 1).

VARANGIAN RUSIA

Alexsander Andreivich - Tsar of all the Russias

DIPLOMACY: Kur(a)

Alexsander, now trapped deep in Polish territory, turned his army around and marched back into Bialoweza. He intended nothing less than to hack his way through the body of Poland back to Rus lands...

THE KINGDOM OF POLAND

King Stanislons Walushesk - Prince of Poland, Mistaken Enslaver of Hussite Christians

DIPLOMACY: None

Stanislons, meantime, had regrouped his army at Warsaw, expecting Alexsander to attack the Polish capital. When he learned that the Rus were marching back east, his lords and nobles urged him to pursue and destroy the Orthodox invaders. The Catholic crusaders were particularly vehement about this. Realizing that if he did not lead them, he would lose control of the Crusaders, Stanislons also marched east.

The Rus had rousted out the Polish militia in Bialoweza and crossed the Nieman into Cherven, where they also slaughtered the Polish garrison. Now Alexsander learned from the stragglers from Bialoweza that Stanislons was in hot pursuit. The Rus turned and engaged the Polish crusaders as they attempted to cross the Niemen into Cherven. The Polish army at Kossovo numbered 14,000 men (much of it feudal crusader ) levies to match up against the 13,600 Rus under Alexsander. The fighting lasted three days before the Poles were thrown back over the river in poor order. Stanislons, seeing that the ford was choked with the bodies of the Crusaders and that the Rus cavalry had been shattered, called it a bad day and fell back into Bialoweza to regroup. Alexsander did the same, though he withdrew to Vlatim in Polotsk to find that things at home had suffered quite a bit in his absence. This sufficently distracted him that he was forced to abandon the campaign, leaving the watch in the west to his cousin, the Boyar of Kur.

For his part Stanislons had disposed of the Crusader situation and had driven the Rus back across the Nieman. He was happy enough with the outcome and he returned to Warsaw to see about his own affairs.

THE KINGDOM OF SWEDEN

King Ilumvar - Prince of Soderham, King of Sweden

DIPLOMACY: Ugly rolls, so No Effect

The Swedes expanded their domain northwards with the settlement of Jämtland to a (0 4) province. Otherwise, things were very quiet in these pagan lands.

THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREATER BRITANNIA

Queen Elanor and King Henry - King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Greater Brittania, Holder of the Royal Seal of Flanders, Keeper of the Irish Talisman of Faith

DIPLOMACY: None

The Queen, angry at the state of the mails, ordered the construction of various new roads dedicated just to the Royal Postal service. Many peasants then broke their backs and got sunburns widening local tracks and putting down gravel surface between Paris and Dreux in Normandy; Paris and Ponthieu, London and Huntington in Anglia and Huntington and York in Northumbria.

Otherwise, in support of the Crusade against the Moslems in Spain, the English fleet sortied from Santiago de Compostela and enforced a blockade of the Portugese coast. Unfortunately for true effectiveness there was no Moslem port there to focus on and the English spent a lot of time just sailing around. No Portugese ships got through that area, however.

Things were much more interesting in southern France, where a large force of Crusaders had gathered at Toulouse. When it became apparent that the English leaders were only going to march them up and down the valley of the Garonne, the Crusaders elected one of their own - Raymond of Toulouse - to lead them against the Infidel. Raymond, in turn, marched his large Crusader army south through Catalonia and Valencia into La Mancha. Cordoba would fall at last!

THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE

Frederick III, Emperor of the West

DIPLOMACY: Provence(f)

Isabeau, preparing the way for the acension of her son, Frederick, ordered the expansion of the cities of Munich, Liege, Marseilles and Frankfurt. This was done and the merchants all cheered. A new section of Imperial Highway was also built, from Mulhaus in Burgundy to Freiberg in Swabia. The Queen also oversaw the construction of even more works throughout the Empire, particularly in the Low Countries. Her religious advisor, Cardinal Erich Papen, also called for an end to the Crusade against the Eastern Orthodox nations - "In such times as these, Christenden cannot afford to be split in faith, things are too dangerous". An olive branch was offered to the Roman clergy and strides were made between the two factions towards restoring central control of the Church as well as amity.

Finally, after the lords of the land were gathered in Frankfurt in Anhalt, Isabeau stepped down from her post and Frederick became emperor in truth as well as name. He was well pleased, for it had taken his mother long enough to come to this decision. She retired, gracefully, to a convent in Switzerland.

Pripen's proclamations did not resolve the issue of the Crusade against the Moslems, however, and many thousands of German and Venetian crusaders (who had gathered in Avignon) marched west through English lands to join Raymond of Toulouse in his campaign against the Moslems in Spain.

THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE

Taddeo Dandolo - Doge of Venice

DIPLOMACY: None

The Venetians poked their head out of their hole and saw that the Crusade in the Balkans had ground down into nothing and that it might be safe to resume normal trade with the Byzantine empire and other operations.

THE REFORMIST CATHOLIC CHURCH

Innocent III - Caretaker of Christian State, Bishop of Rome, Pontiff of the Apostolic and Reformist Catholic Church, Successor of the Prince of Apostles, Servant of the Servants of God

DIPLOMACY: None

Innocent, now secure in his position as Pontiff (the German bishops had finally come through and approved his election as well) turned to deal with the "Spanish crisis" in a manner well beloved of Popes throughout the centuries - the Church unlimbered its coffers and hired Gibraltaros a spanky new mercenary army at Barcelona. At the same time, the Commander of the Army of the Faithful (Hans Wegerer) undertook to move the Italian crusaders out of Italy proper. He had hoped to take more substantial control over them, but many of them abandoned his banners in Provence and rode off to join Raymond of Toulouse in his war. Wegerer was glad to see them go and returned to Rome with the men remaining to him.

THE KINGDOM OF IBERIA

Gibraltaros - Knight of the Jesuit, Protector of the Faith, First True Christian

DIPLOMACY: None

The Iberian army, somewhat stranded in Andalusia, now abandoned the tentative siege of Seville and marched east into Cadiz. Gibraltaros' plan was to swing up the eastern coast to meet up with the mercenary army that had gathered at Barcelona. Once united, they would turn on the Moslems and crush Al-Kalhil's army once and for all! Well, that was the plan anyway...

THE ISLAMIC STATE OF PORTUGAL

Al Kalhil - Protectorate of Islam, Knight of Allah

DIPLOMACY: None

Al Kalhil learned of the movements of the Iberians from his spies in Seville and made haste (accompanied by the Talaverans) to Cadiz to contest the Iberian crossing of the lower Guadal. The New Castillians were also able to join them there (having marched down from La Mancha as well) and another spirited battle ensued at the picturesque town of Osuna between the 11,000 Portugese and the 11,200 Iberians. Al-Kalhil once more proved his ability by severely spanking the Iberians. Gibraltaros fled the field with only 3,400 men back into Andalusia. There the Iberian fleet under Philipono took just over a thousand infantry aboard and evacuated them to Barcelona in Catalonia. Gibraltaros himself was in something of a pickle then, for his 2,200 remaining knights had nowhere to run to. Nevertheless he essayed a dash across Talavera to reach Valencia or Aragon.

Meanwhile, Al-Kalhil's attentions were diverted by the advance of the Papal Expeditionary Force down from Barcelona into Murcia. The Portugese marched hurriedly back through Granada into Murcia in time to find the mercenaries besieging Madiera. Espying the scene, Al-Kalhil noted that there were no Iberian contingents amongst the condotierri. A sly smile came to his face. Master Turban was sent into the camp of the enemy with a heavily laden cart.

Several hours later, the Moslems acquired the services of 26,000 mercenaries. This was for the best, since Al-Kalhil's spies in the north now reported that Raymond of Toulouse had crossed the Pyrennes from Aquitaine into Catalonia with a massive crusader army of almost 60,000 men. Indeed they had already rolled down the coast into Valencia as Al-Kalhil completed his arrangements with the mercenaries. Realizing that his capital at Cordoba was now threatened, Al-Kalhil crossed the mountains into La Mancha with his newly engorged army and, indeed, he had guessed correctly. The Crusaders had marched south along the northern reaches of the Guadal River, heading for the Moslem city.

Al-Kalhil was heartsick to see the sprawling campfires of the Christians - his scouts reported not less than 57,000 men now preparing for battle against the 29,000 Moslems. The prince did take some solace from the fact that his men were tried and tested in battle and had won again and again. The foes in the morrow would face the din of battle for the first time, they might have oe'erweening numbers, but they were ill-trained and not used to battle. The dawn crawled up through a light mist over La Carolina to mark the beginning of the fray. Al-Kalhil arrayed his men in a deep line on a low rise in front of the town, with his mercenary cavalry deployed on the left and his infantry anchored on a fruit orchard on the right. The Christians, despite extreme efforts by Raymond, took several hours to shake out their line and prepare for battle. When it did begin the Christian knights charged the Moslem cavalry on their right, while their infantry made a general advance across the field.

The mercenary knights counter-charged the Christian advance even before it had made contact and threw back the Crusaders in disarray. While the Christian right buckled in, Al-Kahil's Moslem knights charged out of the fruit orchard into the Christian infantry, which had advanced irregularly. The Christian wings crumpled on both sides and then the Moslem heavy infantry waded into the center. By nightfall the Moslems had completed a gruesome slaughter - 56,000 Christians had been killed, captured or maimed in the disaster. Al-Kahil's horse drove the few remaining Crusaders back into Valencia. It was a black day for Christenden. Raymond of Toulouse was captured (he was knocked out by a lance-halft about noon) and sent back to Cordoba to sample the fare in Al-Kalhil's dungeons.

The Moslems completed their sweep of Christian east Spain by overrunning Valencia and Catalonia. Gibraltaros, who had managed to sneak back to Barcelona during Raymond's ill-fated campaign in the south was forced to abandon the un-walled city and fled to hide in the hills of Navarre. The Iberian fleet made landfall at Marseilles.

ALMOHAD EMIRATE OF MOROCCO

Johar Kahliq - Emir of North Africa, Sultan of Sicily

DIPLOMACY: Al'Hauts(ea)

Johar argued with his bookkeepers about the amount of money that had been spent on the School of Arts and Writing; they said none, he said plenty. Who was right? Many imams were sent to Tunisia, where they argued for a long time with the Catholics there.

SULTANATE OF MAMALUKE EGYPT

Grand Sultan Omar Kahill - Sword of Allah, Defender of Holy Shrines, Master of the Seven Seas, Invincible Overlord of Mamaluke Egypt

DIPLOMACY: No Effect

The fellaheen continued to labor on the massive fortifications that the Sultanate was building in Mansura and Egypt. The crack of the overseers lash was well heard in those parts. Other laborers also undertook new works in Mecca and on the desolate island of Socotra, where they built a new fortress, Tamridah. Prince Malik journeyed to Taif as well, both to make the pilgrimage to the Black Rock and to view the new fortifications that bounded Mecca. An attempt by Vizier Jabar to arrange a marriage between a princess of Alwa and Malik failed - too many religious differences scuttled the efforts to form a compromise ceremony. Jabar was furious, "we've treated the Coptic families as equals and now they scorn us!" but there was little to be done about it. Sheik Ali returned from Aleppo to report that the "thousands of slaves" that were supposed to be waiting there for transport down into Egypt were not, in fact, there and the Savafids there were not very helpful about it.

THE KINGDOM OF AKSUM

King Kilwa - Lord of the Coptic Wilderness, Lion of Judah

DIPLOMACY: Obo(nt), Kosti(f), Quarra(nt)

Kilwa, seeing that times had changed and that the ancient institution of slavery (which had led to so much suffering in these long centuries) was no longer viable within his realm, issued a series of edicts and laws that, backed by the full weight of the Church, ended that vile practice within Aksum lands. The government made restitution to the various slave-holders for their "loss of capital". Extensive missionary efforts were undertaken in Buganda and Sidamo and met with good success amongst the animist tribes. A new city, Kefha, was built in the wilderness of Gamo-Gofa to better serve the silver mines there.

A massive diplomatic push was made in the jungles beyond the Mountains of the Moon as the Aksum attempted to establish contact with the West African states. The king of Ankolye accepted the hand of one of Kilwa's daughters in marriage, becoming the Lion's son-in-law. The backcountry chieftain was mightily pleased by this.

THE SULTANATE OF SHEBA

Sheik Omar - Sultan of the Sheban Throne, Patriarch of Islam

DIPLOMACY: Lamu(fa)

The Shebans were quiet, restricting their activities to sending several merchant ships to trade with the Cholans. Otherwise, Omar minded his own business.

ARGUIN DIRECTORATE OF GHANA

Prost - Khan of the Sunni Sword, Protectorate of Kumbi-Salem, Conqueror of Timbuktu

DIPLOMACY: None

The Ghanians, seeing that their land was rich and that the coffers of the king were full, raised two new cities; Betif in Segu and Faish in Niani. Various plazas, aqueducts and so on were also built.

THE KINGDOM OF MALI

Lord Ankonish III - Greatgrandson of Ankonish, King of Akan, Protector of Benin

DIPLOMACY: Benin(f)

The Malians, determined not to be left behind by the Ghanians, expanded Zuzak in Akan a level. Lord Mombutu, the Protector's brother, was shuffled off into early retirement as Akonish the IVth had come of age. Kongolese traders came to Kantu and sold and bought many goods, which pleased the excise officers greatly.

THE KANEM-BORNU CONFEDERATION

Kapotecta - Supreme Chief of the KBC

DIPLOMACY: None

The Kanem ignored the Bornu and vice-versa.

THE KINGDOM OF THE KONGO

Betsiwana - Captor of the Throne of Bone

DIPLOMACY: Loangar(nt), Omote(t)

Kongolese ships made their way north to the Malian port of Kantu, opening trade between the two nations. Betiswana was quite pleased by this, for it meant that Malian gold would soon swell the accounting bags. Chief Krahan, sent south to negotiate with the Nambe, was attacked by those tribes and was forced to smash their army in battle and occupy their province. More bones were added to the Throne.

THE CENTRAL AFRICAN EMPIRE

WiliWooWoo - King of the African Jungle

DIPLOMACY: Chokwe(nt), Zambia(t)

Wili, seeing that many of his warriors were just sitting around, doing nothing, set them to work on many projects - building better huts, dredging irrigation ditches, and so on. They complained, but did it anyway. The acquisition of Chokwe allowed the CAE to open trade with the Kongolese (despite their penchant for bone collection).

GREATER ZIMBABWE

Sofia, Regent for...

Ezzura - King of Sofala, Master of the City of Round Towers

DIPLOMACY: Luangua(t), Kimbu(fa)

The Zimbabwe were very active, undertaking many works throughout the sundered realm. A new city, Ninghon, was built on the Upper Limpopo in Kafue province. Much like the Aksum in the far north, Ezzura took steps to banish the trade in humans within his realm and, indeed, made good progress; though some tribes were loath to give up the tradition of their enemies being property. Master Zebbo and Prince Chiko, working together for a change, managed to convince the Luanguans to once more bend knee to Great Zimbabwe. This was, for it reuinited the kingdom.

THE KINGDOM OF SOUTH AFRICA

Malinemma - King of the Southern Frontier

DIPLOMACY: Alabo(ea), Phalaborwa(ea)

The South Africans struggled to ensure that their strongest subject state was paying enough taxes!

THE EMPIRE OF BETISIMARSAKA
